Depending on how certain things progress, I may be able to be there on the 22nd. I've penciled it in on my calendar and I'll let you know sometime during that week.

Great, I've put both of you on the maybe list.

I was looking over the menu and it seems Saturday is indeed the best day to go, as it is the only day the national dish - Flying Fish & Cou Cou - is offered :)

We're going to plan on 2pm for Saturday's Barbadian lunch at Bajan Bistro. I don't plan to make reservations, so just let me know anytime between now and then if you plan to come.

Sadly I will not be able to make this one. Enjoy!

How was Barbados?

This looks intriguing for when you get to N:

Sounds like just the sort of place for this gang. :D

Sorry I missed yesterday. Hope I get to one of these soon though!

Meal #15 - Barbados

A few months ago I relied on outdated information from the internet and arrived at our Armenian lunch 3 hours before the restaurant actually opened. Since then I've been vigilant about verifying hours of operation. Naturally the one time I let down my guard would be the time our lunch is scheduled at a restaurant that no longer exists, despite their functioning website.

Fortunately I knew of a couple of other Bajan options, so we waited for a few minutes to see if any other FTers would be joining us, then got back on the 5 train and headed to Cock's Bajan Restaurant & Bakery, which does still exist (without a website), in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Our persistence was rewarded with one of the project's best meals to date - flying fish with cou cou (the national dish), accompanied by macaroni pie with plantains and some kind of chicken gravy, as recommended by the staff. Also suggested was "puddin and souse", a dish that lets no part of a pig go to waste, but I wasn't able to work up the courage on this day. The restaurant itself was adorned with faded photos of Barbadian politicians, a framed map of the country, and a radio blaring static, perhaps still tuned a station from back home.

Belarus is up next. Syabri is a Belorussian place on Kings Highway in Gravesend (street view | menu) that would be perfect, but I have not been able to get in touch with anyone at the restaurant. I went by there this weekend and found it closed, but a woman in the shop next door said it was not a permanent closure. I'm hoping the owners are just on vacation, so I'll keep trying to get in touch with someone while also looking for a backup option. This meal would probably be the weekend of March 8-9.

That looks excellent, thank you :)

I managed to get in touch with someone from Syabri and apparently the restaurant has indeed closed recently. I'll try to figure out a Plan B.

what a great idea. A blogger in LA did something similar in 2008/2009 - 100 days of eating food from a different country each day. He found immigrants who would cook a homemade meal for the countries without restaurants. http://manbitesworld.com/. Your looks comprehensive - but will take longer.

I am watching this thread with interest - planning on being in NYC early June (6th/7th/8th) so hoping dates can collide.

We could do our Belgium dinner that weekend, either Friday or Saturday night.

I'll make a note to schedule one that weekend. Our current pace would have us at Bhutan or Bolivia around that time.
