Has the frantic scurrying started yet?:D

We know it won't be the leisure time option.

Looking ahead a bit, the search for Bahraini food is not going well, so we will most likely end up going to a Middle Eastern grocery store and preparing a few dishes like chicken machboos or muhammar at home, probably the weekend of 1/31-2/2. We are happy to prepare extra for anyone who would like to come over.

Things get a bit easier for Bangladesh thanks in part to the city's taxi fleet. As I mentioned up-thread, I regularly ask cab drivers for their recommendations since that's a bit more true to the purpose of this project than googling "<demonym> food nyc". Some recent stats from the Taxi & Limousine Commission encourage this method:

Where Drivers Come From
TLC-licensed drivers come from all five New York City boroughs, 31 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, and more than 175 countries around the world. A handful of these countries have only one driver in the fleet, whereas other countries have tens of thousands. The highest concentration of yellow taxi drivers comes from Bangladesh, with over 10,250 drivers. Drivers from Bangladesh now represent 23.1% of all yellow taxi drivers. Pakistan comes in second with 5,850 yellow taxi drivers (about 13.2% of all yellow taxi drivers). This represents a shift from 2005, when the highest concentration came from Pakistan (14.4%), and Bangladesh was second at 13.6%. The concentration of drivers coming from the U.S. and associated territories has also decreased from 9.1% in 2005 to 6.0% today.

Nothing in the weekend of 1/24-1/27?

I just happen to be in NY that weekend.

We could do one that weekend - either the home-prepared Bahrain dinner or we could knock out Bahrain during the week and go to a Bangladeshi restaurant on 1/25 or 1/26. Let me know if either of those interest you and we'll schedule accordingly.

Apologies for the late update--I have been scurrying, which means my time on FT is limited, so I missed the updates to this thread.

Yes, I am planning on coming up tonight, pending retrieving my car from the repair shop. If they don't get it done today, I should get it in the morning and be up tomorrow. Either way, I'll definitely be there Saturday for dinner!

ETA: called the shop and it's ready to go. I'll be on my way up later tonight!

Great! See you guys Saturday at 7! The table is in my name (PM if you want it). OpenTable won't let me change the reservation from 6 people to 4, so it might still be 6 if the restaurant continues to ignore my e-mail...

Do we still have two empty seats? I can post on Facebook and see if there are any NYC-based FTers who want to join at the last minute.

It seems like most people I know are in SIN for the SIN DO, but there might be a few still around...

Doesn't hurt to put the invite out. The last time I heard from travelmad the reservation was still 6.

I'm a lurker but I'm game tonight!

Hello all,
Your thread just made me register for FT. Great initiative!
Would love to join the next diner on Bahamas food!

travelmad478 Jan 18, 2014 8:25 pm

Hi dobeedoo, welcome to FT! The Bahamas is now just a memory (ate there tonight) but Bahrain and Bangladesh should be coming up shortly.

Meal #12 - Bahamas

An extensive search for an ethnic Bahamian establishment returned no results, but travelmad478 was able to find Norman's Cay on the Lower East Side, where we enjoyed a Bahamas-inspired meal Saturday night. Conch, cracked or otherwise, appears to be the national dish, so we were able to sample a conch chowder and conch fritters along with rum cocktails, the remnants of which are also visible in the fritters picture. Thanks to all who came out; we hope to see you at another meal soon.

We're going to go ahead with our Bahrain meal at home one night this week, then Saturday Feb 1 is the target date for the Bangladesh dinner, location TBD.

If that Bahraini meal takes place tomorrow night, you might be able to count me in...I'm about 80% sure I'm going to misconnect IAD-EWR-TLV and be stuck in NYC overnight. :p

(Mostly kidding...I think...)
