Beijing Do; October 8-9
In spite of the fact my that profile suggests I live in Oregon, I spend the bulk of my time in China, which I know quite well. As such, it's my pleasure to invite you guys to come over here and understand what all the fuss is about. Pending availability, you'll be able to shack up at the Renaissance Beijing Capital Hotel at a really good rate, or somewhere cheaper (I like the YoYo Hotel in Sanlitun).
In terms of activities, the ballot is open, but I pledge to make myself available to accommodate all requests (Great Wall, spas, Xiangshan, etc).

I have not been to China since moondog and I hit Xi'an in 2008, it may be time for me to dust off the Mandarin and roll back into the 'Jing, and help my man with tours for the first timers

put me down for 2 people
As I will have just arrived in Beijing Oct. 8 @3:25pm, and am staying at the Cap Ren already (thanks, moondog) count me and my DH Bob in. We'd be up for joining in on some sightseeing Sunday Oct. 9 for sure and the 10th and 11th too. I had the Great Wall at Mutianyu on my list of things to do this visit; went to Badaling part the last time in 2001.

Several of my pals in the China forum have suggested that the proposed dates are sub optimal, due the October holiday. While I agree that the October holiday is terrible time to be in China (I'm certainly planning on leaving for at least 5 days), we'd only be catching the tail end of it.
jenbel advised us to plan some "activities" in order to sweeten the deal. We will do so, and edit the OP accordingly. But, I'd like to achieve a consensus on the date first. For the time being, all you guys need to know is that Beijing is an amazing city.

Second half of October is Canton Fair
Many may be in China at that time...
Beijing only a couple hour flight from Guangzhou.
Fair Schedule
Phase 1: October 15-19, 2011
Phase 2: October 23-27, 2011
Phase 3: October 31-November 4, 2011

Let's not mislead our prospective guests; after you factor in the traffic (on both ends) and the inevitable hour on the tarmac, you're looking at 7 hours... a small price to pay for some quality time in "the capital", but worth noting.

A few other people are organizing another China DO for Nov 11 - 14 in Shanghai. It may be nice to organize it so that the Beijing DO could follow it and people can attend both events (perhaps with a ride on the high speed rails?)
The Chicago Seminar is in late October, so probably it would be best to have the Beijing DO after, to give some space for anyone attempting the triple DO.

This has not been my experience; plus revenue fares tend to be cheap. I'm still open to changing the date, but none of the arguments presented thus far support such.

Maybe call it a mini-do. Even if I get to meet only one of you FT'ers I'll be happy.

Great idea. I've been following both of these threads with interest and something like that would up the ante. But it's really up to the people who are hosting, and Susiesan is already committed to the October dates.

It's been 2 weeks since this get together was proposed. Is it still on? Is there a guest list yet?
If it's a go, I want to visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu on Sunday Oct. 9. Anyone want to put together a van to share?

I would love to attend but since I live in Beijing I am using my week off of work to get out of the country and will be getting back the 9th. If anyone lives in Beijing and would like to meet up sometime PM me and we can see what we can arrange.
