Rest in peace Newself
Hi everyone. I just got word that Newself, Dave Chesebro, passed away this morning. I don't know many of the details but his wife asked me to post the sad news. A moment of silence for a standup, wonderful, can't say enough good things about a man I considered a brother is warranted from everyone. Rest in peace Dave. We love you.

I knew Dave for 11 years -- he's one of the first FTers I ever met. During that time, we had numerous enjoyable gatherings in SIN, KUL, LAX, SEA and EWR, to name a few. He'll definitely be missed. :(
|
Dave was a class guy. He was one of the first Flyertalkers that I ever met back in early 2001. We shared many a Sam Adams together at the CO Presidents club at LAX. Dave also rode on BRT 1. He'll be missed around here. He'll be missed in person.
Rest in Peace Newself. Dave was 55. Dan |
I am in complete shock. This is devastating news to anyone who ever met Dave, one of the kindest and classiest men I have ever met and I am proud to have known him. I'm honored he considered me worthy enough to share a beer with and one will certainly be hoisted in his memory.
My thoughts are with his lovely wife, his family, and his friends. The FT Community has suffered a terrible loss. |

What shocking news. Dave and I had a long running joke where we called each other sister and brother. This is a loss of a genuinely nice guy.
|
What sad news. I remember many a Seattle DO as well as meals here in Phoenix.
My condolences to his wife and family. He will be missed Janet |
RIP, Dave. I don't remember if we ever met in person, but it was a real pleasure to assist you when you needed it.
Best regards, William R. Sanders Social Media Specialist Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide [email protected] |
A truly great guy and FTer whose company I enjoyed at a number of Dos.
My condolences also to his family and friends. |
This is so very sad, and quite a shock. Dave was a wonderful man.
My condolences to his wife and family. |
Those of us who knew Dave are indeed in shock this evening. He had only last summer tied the knot with Jeannie in an idyllic ceremony overlooking a California vineyard but we know the months since, and before, were his happiest. Like others in this community, we shared several weekends either in California or Buffalo/Toronto, NYC, Dublin or the Scottish highlands. He introduced us to breakfast at Babe's, and dinner and pints at his and Jeannie's favourite "neighbourhood", the Fishhook.
At the moment, further words escape me, other than to thank Jeannie for bringing joy to him over past several years. And Catman for introducing me to Dave. |
In a sentiment shared here by many, I am also in shock at the loss of a truly great guy, a great friend and a class act. :( My friendship with him started as simple "travel companions" and became one of a true "friend".
We will miss someone who gave much to others. RIP Newself. :( Dave |
Shocked and saddened to hear this news. He was definitely one of the good guys and will be sorely missed.
My condolences to his wife, family and friends. :( |
Say it a'int so :(
Like you guys above, I met him at the start of my flyertalk time probably 9 or 10 years ago. I used to stay at the Hyatt a lot in LGB and would meet him at that pub across the street right there on Pine :( What a cryin shame, I'm sorry to hear this. This is quite the downer to end the night on RIP Dave I'm so sorry to hear this |
Very sad news. I'll always remember the weekly CO Presidents Club parties (pre 9/11) with Dave and MrLimo at LAX. Such fun. Good times.
|
So so sad to say goodbye to Dave. Met him ages and ages ago and was one of the "great" guys of FT. It was too soon. And had been too long since we'd caught up in person. We'll have to make a date for the other side. I wish you much peace Dave. -e

I'm so sad and shocked as well. I just can't believe it. Dave was one of the nicest, most pleasant people I've ever met. He'll be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
|
No words suffice.
Maybe thank you comes close. I am grateful for the time shared and the blessing on my life that I received by knowing Dave's kind manner. R.I.P. my friend. |
Franny and I are so saddened by this news. We will always remember the joy on his face when he told us of his impending marriage the last time that we saw him that day in the airport in Australia and the reflection of that joy in Jeannie's face.
It is time for tears. Go with God Dave, and rest in peace. |
Such sad news. I first met Dave at the original BRT and our paths have crossed over the years, most recently at last year's OzFest in Adelaide. Always a delight to talk with and I'll miss him.
Many here have probably met him and just can't match up the screen name. Here's a photo from last year (left to right - Newself, OzStamps, JDiver). http://tom911.smugmug.com/Travel-Aus...31_RttyV-M.jpg |
So sad. It was a pleasure knowing him.
My condolences. |
|
So shocked, so sad. I have so many memories with him in several countries and at home at his beloved Fishhook. FlyerTalk has lost an amazing ambassador and a true friend to many. :(

'Tis a big loss for FT. May he rest in peace, and sincere condolences to his family. |
I have been sitting on my couch wallowing in sadness for the past 3 hours, but now I've decided that if you're going to throw a pity party, you should have good snacks.
So Dave, I'm cracking open a bottle of bubbly and a tin of foie in your honor. I hope you and our good friend Paula (Travelweary) are enjoying a pint of Guinness together on the other side. I'm going to miss you dude. |

Wow, I can't believe such a great guy is gone. :-( We will miss you. If memory serves me right your first trip to Europe was for the DUS Do IV and we were the only two Continental folks and flew together across the pond. A few fond memories in photos. Some from a Dallas dinner and a few from DUS Do IV.
May your friends and family have peace in this time of tragedy. Spent many a day with Dave over the last dozen years. A great, generous guy. He will truly be missed.

We'll miss you, Dave!

When Punki called me while I was working at the convention center this afternoon to tell me that Newself had died, I was initially unbelieving because I'd just seen him post on Facebook last night. He was a such a good guy. Even though we hadn't seen him for a while, he was always the same when we'd meet again. Lots of memories of sharing beers with him at the original PIP, SeaDoos and DUS Dos. He was a classy guy! Condolences to Jeanne and the rest of his family. |
My condolences.
|
I am so sad to hear this.
I never met Dave but so many of my FT friends spoke of him with love and warmth so I always felt our paths would cross someday.
What a sad shock to everyone who knew him. My condolences to his wife, family and friends. |
Jeannie just called me with the news about Dave. I am in shock at the loss of a dear and wonderful friend. I will always remember PIP, BRT I, Portland Beerfest, the trip to HKG, the many trips to HNL and all the other times we were lucky enough to be together to enjoy good food, drink and talk. I am grateful that he found true love and happiness with Jeannie even though their time together was not that long.
We have been talking about getting together in Seattle or Vancouver again for the past year, but could never get the right timing. Goes to show that we should just make time to get together with our friends more often. RIP Dave. I will miss you a lot. TropicalFlyer |
Dave,
We will miss you. RIP and hoist one by the pool for your FT friends. |
Newself was one of the first FlyerTalkers I met more than a decade ago when I was an FT newbie. To me he was one of the faces of FlyerTalk. It was truly a shock to hear of his passing today, too soon, too soon... Flyertalk, and the world for that matter, is a little darker without him. My most sincere condolences and prayers to Dave's family. Thanks for everything Dave, you are missed.
|
RIP Newself, although we have not met yet, it seem I already knew Dave from all the kind of nice words his friends is saying about Dave. ^
Thank you for sharing these pictures. |
My condolences to his wife, family, and friends.
I met Dave at my first DO and would run into him from time to time at other FT functions. We talked story over many a meal the past few years. I, like others here are in shock over this news. He will be missed. |
RIP Dave
What a tragic loss. I have very fond memories of Dave at the PiP and my trips to CA. I'm joining everyone in mourning. Thanks for the memories Dave. You will be missed.

Dave was one of the old-timers who was in it for the friendships first and the miles second. Really, really sad. :(
|
I'm in Europe on holiday & logged on briefly for something else. I received many emails & PMs about Dave, and am stunned/upset to say the least. I literally have to leave in 3 minutes for something & will be offline for at least 36 hours. I'll post when I return, but reading the lovely tributes & memories to Dave above mirror my thoughts.
RIP my friend. You'll be sorely missed. |
