So sad to hear this news.

My heart goes out to Dave's family.

BiziBB Jun 20, 2011 3:57 pm

I'm very sorry to read this news and my prayers are with Dave's family and with all of you who have enjoyed our friend's company.

I only met Dave briefly at Hobart OzFest but appreciate everything that he's done for fellow FTers.

I will toast Dave at SYD airport! Condolences to you. Thanks Dave, you are much missed!

I was privileged to have shared a drink and good talk with Dave on a couple of occasions. So sad to hear of his loss.

My sincerest condolences.

OMG how shocking and sad.

Thoughts and prayers to his loved ones.

So sad to hear the news. Condolences to Jeannie and family.
Sat next to the lovely couple at the Hahndorf lunch at Adelaide OZfest just last year. Sad. RIP Dave

I think this slightly modified quote from Up In the Air suits his memory very well:

Tonight most people will be welcomed home by jumping dogs and squealing kids. Their spouses will ask about their day and tonight they will sleep. The stars will wheel forth from their daytime hiding places; and one of those lights, slightly brighter than the rest, will be his wing tip passing over.

I just found out about Dave's death via a (not-so-pleasant :( ) email with another FT member. (And again, I apologize for the exchange!)

I met Dave often enough that he is one of the few FT members whose screen name I recognized ..... but I had not seen this thread yet. I am saddened by his death.

RIP ..... hope the trip to heaven included an upgrade to Super-Dooper First Class.

Rest In Peace, Dave

Like so many others here, I’ve been processing my thoughts since I first heard Friday afternoon about Dave’s passing and no idea what to say. Dave was one of the first FTers I met -- a dinner in San Diego (I still have a photo of Dave from that evening, clutching a rose between his teeth). Friday night I opened a bottle of red in his memory – I’d like to think it would have been one he’d approve of . So many of the posts here have jogged my memories of fun times spent with Dave: some with other FTers enjoying dinner/drinks in numerous cities, LAX layover dinners at Pacos Tacos, with his local friends having drinks at the Fish Tale or breakfast at Babes, and when Dave decided to “cross over from the dark side” by switching from flying CO to UA. To say that Dave was “one of the good guys” is a huge understatement. When someone met Dave, they instantly liked him. If you got to know Dave, you grew to love him.

My deepest sympathies and condolences to Jeanne, Dave’s family and his friends.

RIP Newself

Hope you will enjoy many more flights on the other side

I'll be in So Cal this weekend, and breakfast at Babe's is near the top of my priority list.

RIP Newself

I was terribly shocked and saddened by the news of Dave's passing.

Dave, you will truly be missed!!!

Dave and I shared a common fear of heights, and on a fairly recent trip, we both chickened out at trying to peer over the edge of the tower in Seoul. I don't think either one of us acutally made it to the edge to look over, but I do remember thinking that I had company with such a phobia.

Dave was one of the "good guys"!! Always generous, friendly, and kind to all.
Whether you were a "newbie" or a seasoned vetern, you could always count on Dave for friendship and good advice.

My condolences to his wife and family.

I met Dave on a flight to Singapore in January 2009, I was on my way to Bali and he was joining FTers for the SIN DO from what I remember. I saw him again on a flight to London a couple of months later in March 2009. He seemed like a great person, very sad to hear this. RIP :(

RIP Dave (aka Newself). Haven't been over in Community in a little while.

Dave guested me into the CO PC club @LAX back in 2002 when I was starting on one of my SIN trips.

I always enjoyed visiting with him at local (LGB) and out of town FT functions.

Dave will be missed. A great guy.

Condition One Jun 23, 2011 3:50 pm

That's incredibly sad news. As somebody aptly put it, Dave was "one of the good guys". I still have fond memories of exploring Seoul with him and a bunch of other FT'ers. RIP, and my condolences to his family.

I only met Dave once at one of Carol's San Diego Do's, seems like hundreds of years ago. Our own FTer lili told me in 2009 how happy he was with Jeanne. What a blessing to have known such joy even if it was too brief....hugs and good wishes to Dave and everyone who loved him!

airoli Jun 24, 2011 2:12 am

I've just seen this now, and am saddened by the news I found. I was able to meet Newself a number of times, and vividly remember the time he handed over Freddie Jr. to me at Wrigley Field. It felt like a big-hearted old-timer had just accepted a newbie into the FT family.

Rest in Peace.

Lori_Q Jun 24, 2011 7:53 am

I'm very sad to hear about Dave's passing. We flew together on his first trip to Singapore for the SIN 'Do. He was so excited to be in Asia for the first time. He was such good company, and it was clear that being out in the world brought him a lot of pleasure. We talked about his Starbucks city coffee mug collection, and I helped him find a Tokyo mug at Narita. We corresponded off and on over the years. On my first trip to China four years ago, I was thrilled to find and send him a Starbucks mug from Hangzhou.

For some reason he came to mind just last week. I had intended to reach out to him, so it's doubly hard to learn that he's no longer flying with us.

Today our friend was laid to rest as family and friends gathered out on the coast to see him off. But Dave will remain with us, remembered and toasted each time we get together in years to come.

hiyo Jun 25, 2011 6:00 pm

I met Newself at my first San Diego FT get-together. He was a real accessible guy and made this newbie feel right at home. I'm very sorry to hear this. Rest in peace.

The day was beautiful, and a fitting testament to our friend and fellow flyer.
He will be missed by all.

Dave

It was indeed a beautiful day. Later this evening at the reception, a few of us were comparing the sunburns we got at the ceremony.

Several of Dave's friends got up to speak, and there were common themes throughout. Dave's love for travel, Dave's love for good food and drink, and most especially Dave's abounding love for Jeanne and his family.

He loved well and was definitely well loved.

Dave was put to rest with a cigar, some Guinness, and a set of flight wings pinned to his lapel. If I'd thought to bring one, I might have slipped a Flyertalk Luggage tag in there too.

It's also my understanding that as of tonight, there is a plaque hanging in Dave's honor at the Fish Tale.

Oh, and for those of you who Dave introduced to Babe's ... Ona, the regular waitress, celebrated her 90th birthday today!!

Sorry I missed you guys at the reception, but I'm here to tell you that If I HAD BEEN COMPARING BURNS, you'd have all lost the fight. I looked like I was ready to be served at the FishTale, 1/4 pound lobster!! :)

I feel a fool, for having forgotten that. :(

Always a delight to talk with and I'll miss him.

Many here have probably met him and just can't match up the screen name.

Here's a photo from last year (left to right - Newself, ozstamps, JDiver).

I don't have the exact details, but this is what I gather from different conversations I've had:

He fainted while at Starbucks that morning, and woke up surrounded by paramedics. They wanted to take him into the hospital for further evaluation. He called Jeanne to tell her he felt fine and would call when he needed a ride home. He didn't call, so she went to the hospital anyway, and he was already gone. I can't even fathom how devastating that must have been for her.

Dave was troubled with heart issues going back several years. It seem things were pretty rough health-wise around Christmas time, and although he was rebounding ... in that last month looked better than he had in a couple years, he was scheduled to have an ICD put in at the end of June.

Jeanne's really struggling right now. I know she read this thread last week, and really appreciates all the kind things she read, and the photos too.

Sad... very sad. I always enjoyed Dave's company. He took me "under his wing" at many Do's and acted as a stern father when I got a bit out of hand. What a nice kind soul he had. Rest in peace Dave. Another page of FT book is closing with your passing.

I just read this thread title and thought I read it wrong. I am so incredibly sad to hear this news. Dave was always exceptionally kind and welcoming to all. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
