Hey, how did you guys like Mad Rose?
I wrote two opinions on them. First on ARLNOW: Matt: May 17th, 2011 11:50 am I’ve become a huge fan of Mad Rose. The restaurant side serves excellent, upscale food for decent (by C-don standards) prices (my only gripe is they serve wine at funky temperatures). The lounge/bar side is nice enough and neither the clarendouches nor the exburbians have discovered it yet and Liberty-ed it Thursday-Saturday nights. With spring in the air and all the outside seating/lounging I’m afraid that’s about to change. Frankly they ought to Tallula/Eat Bar the place because the two sides are so different, but as I say, I’ve become a big fan of both sides. Good luck to ‘em! We wanted to like it...we REALLY did. We had had a pretty decent meal at Mad Rose and thought, jeez, what's everyone so upset about with this place...I even gave them a little love on ARLNow. So we made a reservation and we go there for our second time and they sat us at a table and said the waiter would be by with menus and water. And we sat there. And sat there. There were a couple other couples who appeared to be in the same situation: stranded without water, menus or a waiter. Finally, after about 10 minutes, a waiter came over and says, 'bottled or sparkling water?' My wife says, um, how about a menu? The waiter says, 'Fine. But bottled or sparkling water?' My wife says, 'Tap. And the how long will it be before we get menus...I'm kind of hungry?' And the waiter literally rolls his eyes and says: "Ok, tap, whatever." And walks away. We sit there for about 10 seconds as my wife's blood boils and I say, 'Ok, let's go.' Bad waiter. Whatever. But it gets worse. So we are walking out and my wife stops by the hostess stand and says 'We are leaving because we could not get service and when we did, he was incredibly rude' She goes, 'Ok, bye.' REALLY!? 'Ok, bye!?!?!?!!?!?' Ok, bye is right, lady. Bye bye, Mad Rose Tavern. Bye bye indeed! |
Voting on the location for tomorrow's event will close at approximately 8:00 pm tonight (maybe slightly later if I'm even more tied up here at the office than I expect). If you haven't spoken yet, please do so now. Even if you're apolitical when it comes to restaurant choice, please post to the thread if you plan to attend so that I can get a semi-accurate count should reservations be a possibility. Thanks
koko: as to Mad Rose Tavern, we had no service issues -- in fact, we pretty much had the rear dining room to ourselves when we had HH and dinner there. I wasn't impressed with the quality of the food, and I know of at least one other attendee who felt the same way. With so many other good choices in and around Clarendon, I'm not primed to return anytime soon. |
I say snag an OpenTable reservation for Lyon Hall if you can.

Happy Hour 07/22 @Sculpture Garden
DUE TO UNFORESEEN PORTAL TO HELL HOVERING OVER MUCH OF THE US, THIS IS CANCELED
Please join tonywestsider & xenonym at the Sculpture Garden on July 22nd, 6pm for a happy hour outdoors! http://www.nga.gov/programs/jazz/ We'll be on the NORTH side (Constitution Ave., across from Archives) of the Pavilion Cafe, where there are some shade trees & tables. On the map at http://www.nga.gov/pdf/sculpturegardenmap.pdf, it's the D right under sculpture #1 (which is a giant typewriter eraser). Look for us--we will likely be waiting with pitchers of sangria in hands. Please post affirmative attendance so we know how many snacks to buy @Trader Joe's. No need to post regrets, just affirmations. ^_^ The closest Metro is Archives (yellow/green) & Federal Triangle (orange/blue) would be next. If you're driving, street parking restrictions are lifted @630pm--you often see folks sitting in their cars on Constitution waiting for 630pm. Co-host, xenonym ps you can bring your own food in, just not alcohol--they have several good beers, very strong rum/cachaca drinks, and the aforementioned sangria for sale (cards accepted). |
Wait, tomorrow? I thought all this talk was for next week.... If it's not too late, I'm also in, but no prob if there's no more space.

That, of course, assumes I'm in town. I am right now, but I was also in town all of next week until about three hours ago... |

Margo and I are unexpected overnight visitors to DC, after sitting on a UA 767 for 17 hours almost to Buenos Aires - and the pilot aborted the flight, and turned plane around back to DC, via a stop in Miami -
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...l#post16694410 UA has given us biz seats for 10pm Sat night, so fingers crossed the ash settles by then. :) We have been on planes from Dubai to DC to LAX and back to DC then EZE (almost!) and back to DC so are probably hitting the sack soon after 45 hours in the air, and a shame to miss a DC meeting. :( Been ages since we made one here. Was asking GregIAD at OzFest in late May when they were planned for mainly, and Plan A meant we missed the ideal weekend times. Anyway UA sprung for a room tonight at the Westin Dulles - 703 793 3366 Room 551 - so if anyone is about Saturday for lunch or early dinner somewhere, please let us know. We will check out about 5pm. Glen . |
Here ... Parking is tight, but I found a spot
|
You can put me down for Sculpture Garden on July 22nd, 6pm.
