What they said. This will only happen once.

I am interested depending on the date and time. At least somewhere warm!
I'd love to attend this as well...... maybe even not so warm.

Minnesota Bruin Nov 9, 2010 11:26 pm

Great idea! I hope I can attend.

MSPeconomist Nov 10, 2010 6:22 am

If the logistics work, it might be interesting to have the Randy-DO in Colorado Springs so that we can visit the House of Miles.

El_Chiflero Nov 10, 2010 6:27 am

Clearly there's interest from all of us. Now, it's up to the Boss to see if he's interested as well. Anyone want to pass the word along to him?

Jenbel Nov 10, 2010 6:32 am

You mean a thread's been started about his leaving party and no-one thought to check that he was ok with that before it went public?

perhaps a zealous nature of the OP for his home city@:-)

Sometimes the best way to get RP motivated, is to already set things in motion!! ;)

Anyhow, RP has indicated that 2011 would be far better timing, but beyond that, he did not provide and specifics, preferences or commitments about his willingness to attend.

At this point, I will wait for him to choose to weigh in on this thread with any guidance.

Ditto all of these: it depends a lot on timing and place. Realities apply! Do let us know.

That could be too little advance notice for many of us.

I think we should plan it for a time and place when all of us are available. :D (Kidding.)

RCyyz Nov 10, 2010 10:51 am

Has Randy indicated at all if:

a) He wants to do this Do
b) When he might be available

Doesn't seem so based on the update:

I'll check back as hope the dates & locations can work for me to attend this do. :)

my point is that after all Randy has done (for free) for each and every one of us and how the members of this board are bringing up the idea; I don't think its right that we now ask someone else to subsidize the event; I think its something that we all chip in for and pay for ourselves.

also in its simplest form, I wouldn't think of having a party for you then ask you or your place of employment pay for it.

that in a nutshell is my point

jbcarioca Nov 10, 2010 2:17 pm

A vote for ATL where DL did such a good job helping the recent DL DO. Any chance it could be in early December? Long range planning is hard for many of us.

beaubo,

Randy has been threatening to come on the BRT (see sig below) for years. Maybe we can kill 2 birds with one stone if we do it the same weekend (see sig below).
Wait, 3 birds... since the Travel awards have already been announced for that weekend (see sig below for date). ;) We'll have lots of members in town that weekend. Randy. What do you say?

I can even do the tour on Friday instead of Saturday. ;)

beaubo, Good idea. I'm coming into my off-season, so I have the time. And who wouldn't want to go the CLE in the winter? :D

I grew up in CLE and got my multi-engine and instrument rating at Hopkins Airport. Even with relatives in CLE, I would suggest a warmer climate for the DO.

Either way, I will be there!

Jailer Nov 10, 2010 10:29 pm

It's looking like a single Do may not do and this is gearing up to a full-fledged farewell tour: poor Randy probably wants to ride quietly into the sunset.

Regrettably, no. Hangar One is too contaminated with PCBs, bird guano, etc.

Plus the Navy is getting ready to "de-skin" it (to remove contamination). Not sure when that will be ... and when/if the structure will be re-skinned.

I dunno, Jailer, I'll bet if you get in your tux again he'll happily come to Long Beach.

lol. I am much more able to attend something whose date is announced further in advance than last-minute. Already have trips booked through next September :)

scubaflyer Nov 12, 2010 8:02 am

I think we should make this the largest FT DO ever!

For an event so dramatic as Randy's farewell, I'm sure that FTers would be willing to rally together, go just about anywhere, and make it the largest DO/tribute ever :D. I have to imagine that we can get more than the Chicago 500 together for this DO. It's for Randy after all, THE man who has enabled all FTers to come together to learn, share, gripe, and (usually) enhance their lives through each other.

I agree that DEN would be a great venue. Easy access from just about everywhere, very cool place in general, and very close to Randy's home base. I'm willing to go wherever Randy would like the gathering to be. I won't miss this DO, and I'm sure many others will/do feel the same.

Just give me the when and where. My carry on is already packed ;)

boxo Nov 12, 2010 9:17 am

Randy who? ;)

Randy Petersen Nov 12, 2010 9:39 am

What can I say? The words "thank you" just never seem to be enough for the best memories you've all added to my very happy life.

I really don't think you need a Do for me, the bookends of the first large-scale DO in hawaii in 1999 (PIP—Party in Paradise DO) and then my last DO, the Star Mega DO2 and all else in the the middle are truly the best. And I've lived the other DOs vicariously through all of you.

My goal is certainly to help anyone who needs help the next month or so, making sure that FlyerTalk remains comfortable for you. Maybe after the first of the year when I've had a chance to look back a little I'll see what makes sense.

In the meantime, what about if one of you came to me for a RanDO? I'm very proud of the story of FlyerTalk, the failure at the very beginning in 1995 (how many of you knew that part?) and the restart and then success. I've got the stories and of course the memories of members long past, members who likely would have caused heart-attacks for anyone less healthy, and of course my proud examples of paying it forward to our members and to charities that the many members support. Anyway, I'm thinking of inviting one of you to the first RanDO and here's the idea—read post #21 (which is a reply to #20) here:

I truly am honored you'd want to spend even more time with me!!!!!

This is a great offer for sure. When do we get to hear the terms of how to win such a great prize? I am sure that I am just asking what others are already thinking.

bolding mine: Um, Boss......you may not have a choice ;)

Flyertalkers have been taught well ^ and are a very very very resourceful bunch ;).....you could be kidnapped without anyone knowing or a hoard of F/t'ers may just descend (with seat belts securely fastened and tray tables in their locked and upright positions of course ;)) on the HOM ;)

But besides, we wanna :D

SS255 Nov 12, 2010 2:19 pm

Sounds like Randy would even be amenable to all of us descending on the HOM......at once??? :D (Kidding.)
