@:-) Been searching the forum and it does not appear that there has been anything close to a Do in Shanghai for some years. Any chance of an expert out there interested in organizing a Do in Shanghai next year sometime?

Right now:

Veteran's Day Weekend, Friday thru Sunday, 11-13 November 2011

is in primary consideration.

We are getting serious on this one and have started a new thread Please go to http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...do-thread.html

I'm not an expert, but if somebody does step up, I would love to join in on a Do in Shanghai!

NO expert here, but I can tell you that the PVG DO organized by GK and Sean in 2005 was among the most spectacular in memory!!! The group was small, but we all "knew" one another - or came to "know" one another over the weekend. It was simply fantastic!!!

IF anyone is going to step up and put the gauntlet down, I'm pretty sure that THIS FTer will pick it up!! I loved that DO, I love PVG, and it is a great place for one.

Here's another FTer who would be most interested in a DO in Shanghai. Visited there briefly about five years ago but would love to return - and with an FT group would be the best! Air NZ does a nonstop AKL-PVG so quite easy to get to from this part of the world.

Color me gold!

Would definitely be interested in this one too. In fact, going to be in Shanghai from 2/5-2/15 for CNY. Any other time will work too. Oh well, just not the peak summer season.

I am going to play ignorant when is peak summer season?

Now if we can keep this thread up front maybe we can find a Shanghai guru to volunteer to recommend a venue and offer to be our official guide I would be willing to do some of the coord but never having been there I think I would be lost. Done Hong Kong several times and interesting in that while waiting to board a UA flt last Sunday the GS coordinator was guarding the gate and she thought we out to try Shanghai as in her opinion (she was an PanAm person, me too (the original PanAm)) the place to go

Hmmm... let me try take a stab at the first one. peak summer season = June-August? I'm not a fan of those $1600 RT fares to PVG from the east coast.

Funny how I was born in Shanghai but have not been back much since I moved to NYC. Think I can still help as I'm fluent in Chinese and the local dialect. With regard to the venue and local tour, if we can estimate the number of registrations (I know it's hard!), I don't think it will be too big of a problem either.

From my recollection, the summer months make Shanghai unbearably warm. Would recommend early in the year (chinese new year would be spectacular, though also a bit busy/crowded).

The following is an article which appeared in Hemisphere's Magazine which may serve to rustle up more interest -

Man, I'm at Chicago this weekend for my first DO ever. And I've only done 2 domestic MRs with same day turns prior to this. So I'm definitely a newbie when it comes to all the fancy stuff. With that said, I don't really know what goes into the planning of a DO... but 'm definitely willing to help with local venue, tour guide, and etc... if this is really going to happen.

P.S: I agree summer in Shanghai is quite unbearable. Very hot and humid, and with the pollution? Oh boy... consider yourself lucky if you can see blue sky.

I live in Shanghai now and know the city pretty well(Born and raised here). Would love to help setting up a Shanghai Do in 2011.

I am also a Moderator at FlyerTea, the Chinese version of FlyerTalk. So I can probably bring in China-based FlyerTea-ers to join this event. Believe it or not, there are quite a few of them in Shanghai.

With over 50,000 restaurants, bars and night clubs; 26 InterContinental, 16 Marriott, 10+ Starwood properties and 3 Hyatt properties, Shanghai has a lot of venues to choose from.

BTW, there are over 1 million visitors in the Shanghai Expo Park today - a new world record!

I'd definitely be interested in a Shanghai Do, preferably in the spring or fall.

As I suspected there would be some interest in this possibility. I agree with gvdIAD about spring or fall but from my sked spring is already booked up so I propose we take a straw poll on doing it:

Columbus Day Weekend, 7 thru 10 October 2011

That would put it outside of the really hot time of year and also capture a Bank Holiday in the US so folks could travel home on Monday and not lose too many days at work

That'd work well for me, and I agree that the weather then should be good.
