- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

They offer 4 bonus miles per $1.

I called to canceled my card and hope to get $85 fee waive plus the 750 bonus mile for spent $750 each billing cycle for 16 months. CSR said he did not have that 750 bonus mile above offer on my account.

He offer

- $85 fee waive

Or

- 4 bonus mile per $1.00 I spent up to 20,000 bonus miles cap. If I spent $5000 I will get 25,000 mile.

I choose the bonus miles. Did I make the right choice?

If you don't have an annual fee due any time soon, sounds like a fantastic offer to me. Sounds much better than any of the 750 bonus miles per month offers.

I'd have to say you definitely made the right choice if you can get those 20,000 miles...breakeven would be 8,500 miles if you value your miles at 1 cpm.

keep going higher..supervisors to supervisor and call back again and again...... wife and i are going to South america 1st class from boston and thanks to citi ( and our spending habits)

1) 5 AAdvantage miles on each purchase made at gas stations, grocery stores and drug stores (instead of 1) for the next 12 months, max 5000 miles then back to regular earning rate.

2) 2 AAdvantage miles on all purchases (instead of 1), for the next 6 months, max 10,000 miles then back to regular earning rate.

3) A domestic round trip companion ticket for any fare over $299. Yeah I know, it probably has a bunch of ridiculous restrictions that may make this virtually useless, or almost the same cost as buying 2 flights instead of the 'advertised' 2 for 1 benefit of it.

If I were closer to my annual fee date I assume there might be a statement credit offer, but, these cards were typically a part of my churn.

Has anyone recently (as in past 2 months) gotten anything else?

For the record, since I actually do need to slow down my churning just a little bit for the next while to get my FICO score back into the high 700's again, I've accepted the #1 and the #3 offer. I was inclined to use #2 instead of #3, but, I wouldn't get much use out of the extra AAdvantage mile for a mere 6 months. Besides which, I could always get the companion ticket anyway and then cancel the card after that.

I went for #1 only because I don't have any 5% EDP card any more since Chase reduced theirs from 5% down to 3% -- so it does feel nice to be getting something resembling a 5% reward on my gas/drug/grocery purchases again -- even if it is only short lived.

I have noticed that there is not much in the way of up front bonus mile retention offers any more. I guess too many people were taking the quick miles and then ultimately canceling the card anyway after the miles were delivered (not much of a retention).

For the record, I'm only talking about the personal Citi AAdvantage cards. The Business AAdvantage Mastercard offered a nice 5000 bonus just to keep the card 1 additional month.

I called over the weekend to cancel my AAdvantage Visa Signature card. I was offered an $85 statement credit and the bonus 750 miles for each of the next 16 billing cycles in which I spent $750. I declined and the card was canceled.

(Retention was kind of rude about it, actually. The catalyst for canceling was because Citi has been calling me almost daily to sell identity/credit protection services despite repeated requests to remove me from the marketing list. I explain this to the retention rep, he apologized, and then offered the statement credit and bonus miles. I politely declined and asked him to cancel the card, he hurriedly read through the required statements and then said, "Thank you and GOODBYE!" and hung up on me. Oh well.)

Great offer! Which Citi card did you have? Also do you mind sharing how long you had that card?

I have Citi Mastercard Platinum. I have this card since 2008. I spent a lot on this card for my business but I paid it off every month. Citi waived my $85.00 fee last year too when I said I want to cancell my card but there was no mileage offer last year.

I called and was offered the same. I then told them that I felt this was a bit thin, and asked if there was anything else they could offer. They answered with "we can give you 2 extra miles on top of the normal 1 for each dollar you spend for a total of 15k miles for $5k spend" they added that this must be accomplished in 6 months. No problem; hello Mr President I guess I'll hang on for a few more weeks . . .

How many statements would this apply for? This is a great data point as I also have an ole Citi Mastercard Plat that I opened in 09 (waived fee in 09 and 10) I am wondering if they would extend the offer to me as well..may I ask you when was your annual fee up on that card?

My annual fee is due this month. The fee is show on current statment. The 4 bonus miles per $1000 is up to 6 statments with the maximum of 20,000 bonus miles. I don't know if they can extend that offer to you or not but at least you can asked. After Citi rep offer to waive the $85 fee to me I asked about the 750 bonus mile for 6 months that other FTer mention. He look up my account and he said I can't get that one because it was not offer to me. I only have 4 bonus mile/$1.00 offer. So, I am not sure if each account have a specific offer or how it work. Please keep me update. Good luck .

Just called direct was initially told there were no offers available, then mentioned I was ready to cancel. After several "on holds" suddenly some offers appeared under my account Accepted 3,000 bonus + 750 per statement when 750 is spent.

Someone started a new thread in milesbuzz forum concerning these AA citi retention offers. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...incentive.html

I'd be happy if I'd escaped the 'first time card members only' rule on my 50K+50K application! Sadly, I didn't. You did, but still want more. Sweet deal, if you get it.

This has always been my experience, with various cards. The idea being that you forget about the annual fee until you see it on your statement, at which point you call and cancel, and they refund the fee.

Yeah! 750 bonus miles? That's useless! You can get that by buying normal stuff from aadvantageeshopping anyway. 4 bonus miles per dollar is pretty sweet, even if there is a 20k cap. I assume that cap is in total, not per statement.

12,000 extra miles are useless?

And this and the aadvantageeshopping are not mutually exclusive.
