FAQ

1. Are these cards churnable?
Yes, they are. BUT you’ll have to wait anywhere from 12 to 26 months before applying again. Approvals have happened at the 13 month mark and denials at 24.
There is no set 18 month rule, but always err on the side of caution when churning.
Also- it’s from DATE OF APPROVAL and not from date of cancellation.

2.What are the most current rules in applying for these cards?
#ONLY ONE APPLICATION in a day (make that 30 hours to be safe)
#No more than 2 apps in 65 (approximately) days.
Example:
Day 1 40K personal platinum
Day 2 or later 25-30K personal gold
65+ days later 40K business

While the day limits are a little flexible by a few days either way and YMMV, the rules themselves are not flexible.

3. How long does it take for the Admiral passes to arrive?
For the better part, it takes about 3 months. This is not a set number, and some have received theirs sooner. It's been deduced that the passes are handled by a 3rd party that mails them in batches. Please don’t call Citi for the passes, because you’ll mostly find a CSR who doesn't know better and will give you wrong information.

4. Can I apply for a business card if I don’t have a business?
Technically, you can. But you may be asked for a 4506-T form, or to provide proof of business or/and a copy of a bill with your business name on it. If you don't already have a credit history for the business name you plan to use (meaning this is your first rodeo) then it is recommended you use your name as the business name with no income and 0 as years in business.

5. How do I get the statement credit?
First, you have to make sure if the offer you signed up for gave you A $150 credit or UP TO A $150 statement credit. For the 1st, any AA coded purchase ($50 AA GC seems to be the simplest option here) will/should trigger it. For the 2nd, you’ll have to spend $150 to get the $150 credit.
For more information on what will work and what won’t, please see here (thanks sdsearch) and here (thanks dogbyte)

6. Does the $150 account credit (for AA purchases using the VISA or AMEX) count against the spending required to receive the initial mileage bonus?
No. It does not. (Put differently: any account credit you receive has no impact on your spending total for purposes of earning the "X thousand miles for $Y spent in the first Z months" bonus.)

7. Can I buy Visa gift cards to meet my minimum spend?
There’s a very good chance that it’ll be coded as a cash advance.
It’s recommended to call citi and have them set your Cash Advance limit to zero. (thanks KennyBSAT)

8. Do I get 10% back when redeeming miles for awards?
It depends. First, the rebate program (which began in April 2012) applies only to holders of these cards:
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard
  • Citi Select AAdvantage American Express
It does not apply if you hold only the Citi Gold World MasterCard.

Also, the maximum rebate for any cardholder in a single calendar year is 10,000 miles. Having more than one qualifying Citi AA card will not allow you to receive a larger rebate; the restriction applies per AAdvantage account.

9. At what locations are my one day Club passes valid?
All valid locations are listed here.

It's January 1. Probably a lot of back end/website tweaks are either taking place or queued up to happen as soon as their IT folks get to it. Unless you have some time-critical need, I'd give it 24 hours to settle a bit.

That said, I agree that citi's online account websites suck badly.

If I (foolishly) only applied for the Personal Citi AA Visa last year .... do I have any personal/biz combo left to maximize the Citi AA cards?

TIA for any insight. ^

Virtual and Physical are both billed my AA. I was able to purchase one of each a few months ago on my Visa and Amex and both triggered the $100 credit.

Newbie question: Is American Advantage Visa still 50K. I see 30K on the citi website.
Are there special links for more miles?

See the thread title? Look there for the answer to this question. And then read the rest of post #1 and the link there for answers to other questions that you're sure to have.

For those of you who have puchased AA gift cards to trigger the statement credit, do you know if multiple ones can later be consolidated into just one gift card? Thanks in advance.

AFAIK, multiples GC can not be consolidated. However AA allows usage of more than 1 GC while purchasing a ticket, so that might be useful.

My husband and I both just downgraded our AA Citi Select Amex cards to the free Bronze card from Citi. The downgrade will happen in February. It's been 2 years since we opened this card (back when they had the 100k offer) so we want to apply again.

Is it ok that we downgraded or should we just cancel our current cards?

Thumbs up cancel an Amex (and keep the Visa) to get a bonus offer for a second "free" Amex?!?

I applied for both the AA Visa and the AA Amex in Nov 2011. After having read on FT of fewer retention bonuses on the AA Amex than the AA Visa, I decided to cancel it online after about half a year (thus at least half a year ago I think by now).

Well, about a week ago, AA sent me an email invitation to add an AA Amex card to my AA Visa card for 25k bonus miles (with $750 spend), and no separate annual fee for the AA Amex as long as I keep my AA Visa open! After first making sure I got the retention bonus on the AA Visa on Monday, yesterday (Tuesday) I applied for it online and (after an online chat in which they moved some credit around) got approved. (The online chat popped up automatically after I got to step 5 which showed my application ID.)

I don't offhand see how I could have gotten this many miles for this little spend had I kept the previous AA Amex instead of cancelling it. (Of course, neither could I have foreseen that they would send me a targeted offer to "add" an AA Amex to my AA Visa after I'd cancelled an AA Amex about half a year ago. In fact, the cancelled AA Amex has still not dropped off my online Citi AA account!)

(I don't shop at whichever that one chain store is that accepts only Amex and no Visa. I guess someone who does might have had a reason to keep the Amex which I didn't have.)

Thanks for sharing the data point, sdsearch.

The sense I'm getting is that while retention bonuses are worth pursuing if you want to keep a card, they pale in comparison to the sign-up bonuses. So, cancelling and re-applying later seems to be a better strategy in general (though I'd imagine there are exceptions to that).

It will remain there for as long as you would like to see it if YOU do not remove it yourself.

I thought you have had Citi cards long enough to know this nature of card displayed online...

Actually come to think about it, Chase and AMEX also do NOT drop off canceled cards despite AMEX has a link for you to click to remove the canceled card, and Citi now also has such feature. Some of us choose to keep the canceled cards for online viewing for extensive time after being canceled...

The Adding an AMEX to an existing Visa is not a new offer - it is just that not everyone receives such. On top of that, it does not seem to have anything to do with whether one has had an AMEX before based on previous reported data as some reported they still had active AMEX cards when they were offered this "attached" AMEX.

Applied for two. Both deferred.

Called for the first one: got it.

Called back for the second: more processing.

Not sure if I waited too long.
