Spas in China

Have seen the ads for Shangri-la's Chi spa and toured the
spa at Marco Polo Shenzhen and Queen Spa but never
new China was known for spas.

Any references for spas in China?

Depends on your definition of spa. Day/weekend getaways, traditional hotel spas, bathhouses etc... Plenty of options, some are quite good.

Those posts are kind of dated. (Well, in Chinese time frame) Anything new. Like real spas...not hotel
saunas.

I think the main problem is hygiene and lax attitudes of typical Chinese staff towards it. For that reason I would normally only go to Korean saunas with Korean owners.

I was very pleased with the spa at the Sheraton in Ningbo. It was different than the majority of hotel spas I've been to in China. I've been to a few spas outside of hotels (very few as the majority tend to cater to men) and have been extremely disappointed in the Shangri La's when it comes to hotel spas.

From recent experience I think Shangrila brand has deteriorated.
Their marketing department needs a revamp. They are operating in
a pre-recession era.

Back when those guys ran the Portman, it was an amazing hotel (still the same tiny rooms you get today).

In current times, I remain a supporter of Shangri-la properties in second tier cities because (almost) all of them manage to serve a great burger, which is exactly what this American body craves after a night of banquet food and 白酒.

Back on topic, I'm still awaiting your email regarding the TJ spa that my friends have plugged to no end. My hope is that you'll go there and tell us about it.

Its hard to think of spas in north China now. Its like 90 degrees here in LA now.
A brief spite of "endless summer". Better to soak up some California sunshine
and hope that it translates into a better economy.^

Just went to Queen Spa this past weekend. My first spa experience and I cannot have been more pleased with the experience.

98 RMB entry for 24 hours included fruit, ice cream, juice, sauna/ steam/ showers, laundry (one pair of socks and one pair of underwear), sleeping pod (for those who wanted to overnight), and of course those nice comfy chairs to watch tv and get pampered. Also had free ping pong and internet. Seemed like a family place with a fair number of kids running around and was co-ed (besides the locker rooms/bathing areas).

There was a lot more, pool/snooker tables, private rooms (we got one for 48 RMB/hr) manicure, pedicure, hair styling etc...

Seemed clean, good service.

I read somewhere a European guy stayed at Queen Spa for 11 days.

Queen Spa in Shenzhen and Grand Waldo Spa in Macau, those are the only
two mega type spas I have ever heard of.
