Low loads to China

I thought there was a thread around on this but I can't find it.

My wife recently flew to China. At takeoff there were others in her set of seats but later they moved off to find more open space--she ended up having three seats to sleep on!

(United Airlines, SFO -> PVG.)

That's why UA hasn't started SFO-CAN, US hasn't started PHL-PEK (and probably never will) and DL flying ATL-PVG only 5x weekly.

China's Canton Fair suffers drop in attendance

"I sat here all morning and didn't have one customer stop by,"

"I haven't had any orders so far at this fair. This is all I have," he said, reaching into a tattered shoe box and grabbing four business cards left by prospective buyers

Why don't they drop ticket prices?

Kinda like the Olympics, the venue is "sold out", but only 2/3 full, scalpers selling
tickets at 10x face value. Go figure?

And despite that, United pretty much has zeroed out all advance confirmable upgrades to China from the U.S. Jerks.

If you follow Einstein's theory of relativity you could fly ANA with their cute FAs
and the flight would be only 12 minutes.

I was looking at air-fares for late Sept 2009 and NRT/PEK are running around $1100 in economy is something happening in Peking this time frame or are they usually this high?

Those rates are pretty typical for modestly discounted fare classes on Japan China routes,.... but most people pay significantly less. I suggest you find a travel agent and/or stay on top of the airline web sites (NW, NH, JL, CA, etc.) Iran Air and Air Pakistan also fly the route in question several times per week. Finally, you want to fly HND-NAY, I think JL and CA might be your only choices at present.

Thanks much for the quick reply... will check out the TA option and the other websites. We are planning to meet up with some friends in Peking and celebrate our 20th anniversary later in Hong Kong so I thought a couple of days first in Tokyo might be nice.

I see NWA has awards for 40k each which not be a bad option under the circumstances.

Flying to/from PEK and buying a discounted ticket in the opposite direction -- PEK/NRT/PEK -- could be considerably cheaper!

Richard: While your idea is definitely a step in the right direction (i.e. midway between biz traveler and normal person), you can do much better on a RT basis. Ex-Japan, you MIGHT need to tack on a hotel in order to get a good deal. Ex-China, $400 RT is easily attainable 99% of the time. In fact, back in the day, you could have tacked on SFO/LAX and saved money.
