This is accurate as of this week. I was just there. UK citizens can now get those visas but they're something like 450HKD/RMB.

Eliminating the SEZ checkpoint is considered the prime reason why Shenzhen has had a massive crime wave in the past year. They used to deport (FWIW) criminals from there and while they still can, there's nothing really stopping those guys from coming back in. It's considered to be the main reason why crime, which was always relatively high vs. the rest of China has gotten much much higher in just the past 12 months.
Interesting to see the background story of it. I just used Lo Wu a day and a half ago, and it was pretty simple (minus the fact we got there 5 minutes after 10, so there were moderate lines until we got to the front and then they opened a bunch of stations)

Lo Wu isn't too bad.. it can get busy but now HK/Macau SAR residents go through the automated checkpoints so it's swift for them. For us foreigners... the lines remain.

I did have a lady spend 20 minutes, with three other officials, on the China side of the Macau/Zhuhai gate checking my passport wondering what I was doing in Panama 4 years ago..... just a lot of inane crap but she was polite about it.. I just bit my lip and read the bombardment of text messages my friends on the other side were sending.
