Kunming/Lijiang

Has anybody personal experiences with hotels, restaurants, sightseeing etc. in these places in Yunnan province. Will go there next month for six days on individual tour. I studied my guide-books, but would welcome personal recommendations. Thanks in advance.

A couple of years ago we flew into Lijiang, travelled up to Zhongdian and flew out from there.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Lijiang which was fine and in a good location. This was before the Banyan Tree opened but it'll still be a lot cheaper in the Grand Hotel now. Breakfast was fairly good for Chinese hotels.

Old town gets pretty busy late morning till about mid afternoon and the streets are narrow. However outside these times it's lovely, especially in the evening, to sit outside a restaurant or cafe - very relaxing. No particular restaurant recommendations I'm afraid as I can't remember the names of where we ate.

In Zhongdian we stayed at the Angsana hotel.

I visited both Kunming, Lijiang and Zhongdian last year. The best by far was Zhongdian - Lijiang was swarming with tourists and had the feel of a theme park. We hired a car with driver in Lijiang and drove to Zhongdian - the scenery was spectacular - and toured the areas around Zhongdian (before I caught a plane back to Kunming and then Beijing).

I quite like the Green Lake Hotel (Cui Hu Bingguan) in Kunming. It has large rooms, attentive service, very good breakfast included in the price, and it is right next to the Green Lake. Don't confuse this place with the Green lake View Hotel, which has none of the above.

In Lijiang, there are zillions on semi-quaint guesthouses in the Old Town. I stayed at a place called Zen Garden, which was in the Old Town but off the beaten path; it was one of my favorite hotel experiences in China, and it was only $50 per night.

Good luck.
