laptop on flight and in china
I will be traveling with my old iBook G4 and have a couple of questions for any laptop-toting travelers out there....
My powersupply says "AC 100-240V 50-60hz." My understanding is that this will handle any voltage I will encounter abroad?
anybody know if there are power outlets on the China Eastern Airbus 340-600 (I will be in economy), and if so will I need to buy any sort of special adapter beforehand?
and any recommendations for adapters to bring, if I want to use the computer in my hotel room?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Regarding voltage you should be safe in China. And most hotels have adapters.
Regarding your flight I'd say NO (http://www.chinaeastern.co.uk/planes.html - they mention 'laptop power ports' in first and business, no mention in economy).
As you can see at http://www.seatguru.com/charts/intl_economy.php, power ports in economy are still quite rare.
I once had luck asking a C/A on a CZ flight to charge my laptop. You could try that too.

All your "name" hotels in Shanghai have universal plugs. The standard power outlet here will accomodate a US style 2 or 3 prong plug.

Most Chinese hotel rooms will have this wall plate:
http://www.kropla.com/china_power.htm
It will accept 2-prong US plug, but not 3-prong ones.
There are more information on that website for plugs around the world.

I have been able to borrow converters from hotel management in virtually every hotel I have stayed in China over the last decade, and many of these don't usually cater to western visitors, so I would guess that you are safe. In the event that you need a converter when you get there, they can be bought for under $3 at most supermarkets and small electronics shops that you find on the street.

All the hotels I asked in China last year had adapters. But, they are not always so well made and the effort to enable the adapters to fit many kinds of plugs may lead to problems.
When I plugged in my laptop in Shanghai I blew every fuse on the floor. The adapter was given to me by the hotel, but was not a good fit. I had the best luck at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf cafes. Free power, free adapter and free wifi. Good breakfast deals too. And, no blown fuses. ^
