Thank you kb1992, narvik and uani for all your helpful explanations.

Looks like I am good Jan 9 UA857 flight if I get all the right tests tomorrow at the Northern California clinic and receive the green coide.

Not looking forward to the 14+7quarantine in Shanghai and additional 7-day monitoring in Beijing. This will be my third quanrantine in Shanghai.

Wish you smooth travels, it is the most we can hope for right now!

Hope you don't get the #37 hotel in Shanghai! ;)

Yes, that's odd to me.

Thought so:
United seems to have canceled (or forced to cancel) ALL flights SFO-[ICN]-PVG until February 9th....
At least they don't seem to be bookable for passengers (potentially just booked full?). Are the flights still going, maybe for cargo only?
Are they flying without passengers to China, then with passengers back PCG-[ICN]-SFO?

It's showing as scheduled for 12 JAN (today) and 14 JAN (Friday).
Showing as CXL for 15 JAN.

The flights are showing as full due to having to re-accommodate PAX from the cancelled flights... The Chinese government is limiting the capacity to 70%, so that doesn't help things. They upgauged the flights to a 777.

In the past two days another 35 flights into China have been suspended, I get the feeling that many more suspensions will follow....

Basically all flights from the USA to China are suspended for different lengths for the next month or so. Ostensibly it's because of positive cases onboard, but conspiracy theorists will say it's Olympics related.

I was on Jan 9th UA 857 flight that arrived on Jan 10.
Based on the reports by local social media, someone from the flight tested positive at the airport test. The test result was not out until that particular passenger had spent the night at the quarantine hotel.

Based on social media reports, several passengers tested positive in the past week on multiple AC, AA, DL, MU and UA flights that came in from North America.

I don't see any reason to go conspiracy on this--they have had a policy of suspending flights for too high an infection rate and these days I would be surprised at any flight not exceeding their threshold.

Having difficulties finding a +7 hotel in Shanghai after my current 14-day isolated quarantine ends.

The hotels I stayed the previously have all changed policy not accepting +7 stay.

Not a surprise based upon what happened this past week where a woman in the +7 period roamed around Jing'An leading to a few positive cases. My money is on the +7 being changed to either a strict community monitoring in your own apartment or just an extra week at the quarantine hotel if you don't have a place in Shanghai.

Are you looking for suggestions? Do you have a preferred area?

No particular area, but I was hoping for a Hyatt brand hotel. Preferably not in Pudong. Good internet connection is essential.

Welcome any suggestion

Unfortunately it appears to be a matter of the remaining available hotels being mostly 'booked out', i.e. they limit the amount of people doing +7 quarantine at each hotel (used to be 30/hotel I think, maybe even less?).
Just checked with the hotel I stayed at back in November 2021, and they're now booked out until March. :(

Had friend call, and this hotel is okay to book RIGHT NOW (see *):
****HOTEL INFO SENT VIA PM***

NOTE *:
IIRC, your last day of quarantine is going to be EXACTLY on CNY and all hotels will be booked out!!!
Also: it's NOT the same as before; you are now required to STAY IN YOUR ROOM the whole time, but can order food from outside. NO HOTEL RESTAURANT visits are allowed, no going outside.

Hope you see this SOON, as this availability might be gone even as fast as later on today.....

So how do you get those required Covid tests if you can't leave your room during the +7 period?

I didn't go into that much detail, and am only conveying what the hotel said, and what I have heard.
It's stricter than before, is my take-away.
