China Eastern Experience ORD-PVG-NRT

We will be flying ORD-PVG NRT on 16th with overnight stay in PVG. We are planning to stay overnight a hotel near bund. We will be using direct transit 24 hours TWOV

I have I had a couple of questions if you someone has the time to answer for ORD-PVG-NRT trip. Is the luggage checked all the way from ORD to NRT or do we have to collect the luggage at PVG clear customs and have to check in again next day for PVG NRT journey ? How much time did it take from arrival to getting of airport ?

If using TWOV, do you have to go through customs ?

Regards

I can't answer the baggage through-check, but if you do have to collect your bags the process is fairly painless and quick.

On disembarking you should walk quickly to the arrivals hall to make sure you are close to the front of the TWOV queue. Bags, if you have to collect them, will be out fairly quick. Customs is there, but unlikely to scan your bags - you just walk straight out.

As a rule of thumb I allow 1.5 hours from time of landing to be in the city. It can be quicker than that but sometimes immigration can slow you up or there could be a wait for a taxi or for the train.

ORD-PVG-NRT

Thank you for the reply. Our flight is 5:30 PM from Shanghai. If we leave the bund area around 1:30 PM, is that sufficient time to make it to airport and catch the flight ? We will go to the maglev station and catch the maglev.

While coming back, our Chicago flight is 11:30 AM. If we leave bund area at 7:30 AM is it sufficient ? Please advise as we are not aware about the traffic direction and security check lines. I am assuming 1 hr for travel to PVG and 3 hours for checkin etc.

Anyone can chime in.

Regards

Four hours is waaaay too much time! I am fairly risk averse and coming from slightly farther away than the bund I leave home three hours before departure. With a taxi ride and maglev that gets me to the airport 2 hours before departure. Even with slow queues that gives an hour to spare after completing check-in, immigration and security.

If you want to be cautious I'd leave the bund three hours before departure for a comfortable journey with no stress. four hours and you'll be walking up the walls with boredom at the airport.

Hi,
I am posting my experience assuming it may help someone. We checked in chicago for ORD-PVG-NRT flight through China Eastern MU 718. They issued boarding passes and checked luggage upto shanghai. The flight was on time and we reached 90 minutes EARLY. Yes, you read right early. We arrived by 5:50 pm and went straight to immigration and used the TWOV line for 144 to 24 hours. It was smooth. You just have to show your confirmed tickets. You are fine if you have it on phone. You dont need boarding pass for next flight. By 7:15 we cleared immigration and customs, stored our luggage in departure area and were in a taxi. One thing to note is if you take taxi take it outside the airport and there is a line. Dont solicit taxi from an individual. We arrived at our hotel, Grand Hyatt Shanghai by 8:05. Taxi meter was 185 Yuan. The hotel was fantastic. We than checked in and stored our luggage in our room on 75th floor. Wife wanted to see the SWFC tower next door. We went up. It was amazing view. We than walked a little on the Financial district. Later went to our room. NExt day visited bund, Yu Garden,Nanjing Square and check out of hotel by 1:30. Took cab to airport collected our luggage and got boarding passes for tokyo. Boared the flight which was about an hour late. Everything worked great. While coming back also we had booked hotel, Renaissance by yu garden. Excellent hotel, got upgraded to suite FOR FREE. We like to arrive the airport 3 hours before departure time and we were so glad about it. We started from our hotel 4 hours before departure time. went to maglev station, took the maglev which was a 7 minute ride. 431 kph per hour. For some reasons there was a big rush for checkin. By the time we reached the boarding gate it was 45 minutes before departure. BUT the flight was 90 minutes late. They boarded us on time and we waited inside the flight for 90 mins. Overall We were very pleased with china eastern flight. The money we saved, we splurged on great hotels and food.
