Or the Hilton is right there as well.

I suggest you take the subway/Maglev on your way in and bus or taxi on your way back to the airport (Maglev doesn't run at top speed early in the morning anyway).

If you need to cross from one side of the Huangpu River to the other by taxi, especially from Pudong (浦东) to Puxi (浦西), you may want to make sure your driver will make the trip, and knows where he or she is going. Some drivers only know their side of the town and will be as lost as you are once they leave their side of town. Taxis are notoriously difficult to get on rainy days and during peak traffic hours, so plan your journeys accordingly. As the crossings between Pudong (浦东) and Puxi (浦西) are often jammed with traffic, taking a taxi may be a more expensive and less time-efficient alternative to using the Metro to cross. It may be better to take the Metro between both sides, and then catch a taxi on the side that your final destination is on.http://wikitravel.org/en/Shanghai#Get_around
Is this accurate?

I'm narrowing down some hotels in the Jing'an Temple area. Are there any in the area to avoid? Otherwise, I'm trying to find a site with a good deal for one of the hotels already mentioned.

The most accurate thing about that taxi information is that it is usually faster to take the subway from Pudong to Puxi. That being said, taxi drivers all know the big destinations in both Pudong and Puxi and one that says they don't means that they just don't want to make the trip. Getting taxi's around Lujiazui is a pain as they often times wont pick you up and will not use the meter. If going from Puxi to Lujiazui then it's always better to take the subway.

There are lots of hotels in the Jing'an Temple area, it's probably best if you list the ones you are considering and the Shanghai experts on here, like moondog, can advise you which one is the best choice for your budget and expectations.

I'm looking at these at the moment:

Greentree Inn Shanghai Jingan Xinzha Road Business Hotel
Hotel Equatorial Shanghai
Shanghai Hai Gang Hotel
Kevin's Old House
JI Hotel Jing'an Temple Shanghai
Ladoll Service Apartments
Swisstel Grand Shanghai (depends if I can find a site with a good deal)

If you take the Maglev TO the airport, be prepared for airport style security at the station, possibly including a hand search of your luggage.

You might want to add the Jing'an Hotel and the Shanghai Hotel to your list as fall back options. They are both behind the Hilton, and for I can tell, they might actually be owned by the same company. But, once get below y600 per night in that area, beware that hotels tend to have nice rooms and dreadful rooms (dark, pint sized, self contained plastic bathroom... airplane style).

Let us know what kind of rates you're getting across the board, and we'll opine accordingly because prices fluctuate a great deal (i.e. during the first year the Swiss was open, it was possible to reliably get rooms there for y350 per night!, and I've seen the Puli as high as y5500, and as low as y1800... which, is still $300, but it is a very nice hotel).

For the hotels on that list, I'm getting between $180 and $307 AUD for the 2 nights.

Another option to be close to the airport but close enough to see the city and possibly in your price range is the Jumeirah.

Sometimes prices at 1000rmb a night.
20 minutes from the airport if you taxi and maglev or metro and maglev. Metro to the bund area is only 25 min

The hotel is great for that price range. The downside is you are away from downtown and nothing great nearby the hotel.

Interesting, although of course never available when there is any trade show on next door. Which is often.

Actually very easy to access by line 7 from the Maglev station and the small shopping centre at the Shangri-La even has affordable restaurants.

IIRC there are some restaurants, a big (for China) self-service grocery store, and a western drugstore in the big mall (Fashion Mall?) almost across the street from the Shangri-La along the river on the Pudong side..

I haven't ever seen this. When did you experience this?

All I've seen is putting your bags through a big scanner thing and no personal search/metal detector at all.

After my bags went through the "big scanner thing" they wanted to dig around by hand. Those few additional minutes caused me to miss a Maglev train. Maybe I looked too much like I was in a hurry.

In this particular case I meant the newer Shangri-La next to the SNIEC exhibition halls. The Jumeirah is on the other side of the street.

Its Kerry Hotel, similar to Traders, a division of Shangri-La group. Not a "Shangri-La" hotel in the common sense.
