Ha! Ha! That not much of a consolation!
Been to several of these places in Dongbei. Not a trip that I would do a gain or recommend. A lot of places in China that are more interesting.
Other than the Harbin ice festival, I don't think that this part of the country gets a lot of foreign tourists (except Russians maybe).

There is 1 train daily Shanghai-Harbin now. K56 takes 31 hours 43 minutes.

But that high speed train runs by day. It takes up the whole day. You need to sleep the previous night in Shanghai to depart in 9:44, and you are dumped in Harbin West at 22:47, looking for a hotel in winter night. And pay 898 yuan for the pleasure in second class.
Alternatively, you could get on K56 the previous evening at 21:05, spend two nights in lower soft sleeper for 767 yuan 5 jiao - saving 130 yuan 5 jiao PLUS the cost of both hotel nights - and arrive at 4:48.
Now, the slow train Shanghai-Harbin is T72. It takes 1:00:23, departing 13:52 and arriving 14:15.
But, on 21st of April, like yesteryear, summer comes in Manchuria. And in this summer, unlike last summer, Tianjin West-Tianjin-Qinhuangdao high speed railway exists.
Therefore high speed train shall continue to be numbered G1204, but shall take 12:00 instead of 12:57, leaving at 9:47 and arriving at 21:47.

Winter again!

On 10th of December, High Speed South Manchuria Railway shall be slowed down again.
At present, the fastest trains Dalian-Harbin are G47 and G49, equally taking 3:30 with 2 stops (Shenyang and Changchun).
These shall vanish from 10th of December, 2014, after which the fastest train shall be D1301 taking 5:22.

What is an improvement is that in autumn 2013, Manchurian railway was slowed down on 1st of December, but in 2014, G trains continue till 9th of December, inclusive.

Yanbian is overcrowded by southkorean tourists in summer and fall.

But I didnt meet a lot of "western" tourists in the last years.

Shenyang-Dandong high speed railway opened!

At the beginning of this month.
I count 35 high speed (D and G) trains Shenyang-Dandong. Trip time 1:10 to 1:45. Ticket price on D trains from Shenyang Station second class 70 yuan, first class 87 yuan. First morning train, D7601, departs 5:32, arrives 6:48. Last evening train, D7641, departs 21:15, arrives 22:31.

There are 8 slow trains daily, trip time 3:39 to 5:06. Hard seat price 38 yuan 5 jiao or 41 yuan 5 jiao.

Dandong Station is near Yalu River. Thus, Shenyang-Dandong high speed railway is the first high speed railway to reach the border of China anywhere, although not as yet cross it.

Yes, schedules change frequently. Especially at this time of the new. so there is no point in giving schedule in a forum thread. Better consult real-time schedules. There is no lack of companies offering the information on the web for those who can't read the official website.
