If I can get the UA nonstop I might be tempted to come back direct, but still that means giving up CX for UA F (I think I can spend another day in HKG for that. Else ANA F from BJS to NRT-IAD will be fine as well.
It is hard to argue against the nonstop, but I strongly prefer CX, JL, and NH to UA. JL is my favorite of the 3. However, NH to IAD is pretty convenient for you. If you go that route, I believe you'll need to spend a night in Narita. They will give you hotel vouchers.

Even though it's a very touristy thing, I really love going to the weekend antique market in Beijing. You can do it in a morning. 100s of vendors, great people watching.
