yes, the BJ fireworks were tamer, still a lot of midnight noise & the 'spring festival smell'. By 2 am hardly any noise this year, but still the unique odor.

I think next year, (Feb. 9/10, 2013) we might have to try the CNY in SH. I did note that the airline prices between BJ-SH on the day prior & the morning of CNY eve were deeply discounted. Same discounts on an early mid-week return from SH to BJ. And Feb. 10th is after the super bowl in 2013.

Yes, the last few days have been cold and crisp, but clear and with good air. And the lack of traffic is marvelous. I was out last night at friend's house gobbling jiaozi, and at 10 pm, managed to get an empty taxi from her place back to mine! Good fireworks show in both her area (Sanyuanqiao) and mine (Dongzhimenwai). I was surprised by how things quieted down by about 1 am so was able to get a few hours of quality sleep. Which is good since I am actually working today (and all this week). Will try to fit in a temple fair visit in a couple of days.

Anyway--to all FT'ers--Xinnian Kuai Le! Happy New Year!

When you have windfall profits, a good place to
go for CNY is where its warm....even if you can't
find a seat at a baccarat table.

Last night was a war zone near my house.

Whole apartment shook and rolled. Stupid idiot ran a long roll of firecrackers underneath some cars and lit it. Car alarm went off and didn't stop. Another winner of the Darwin award wrapped firecrackers around potted plant holders and it blew the thing up. Everything around was hit with flying soil.

Truly surprised that no body seemed seriously injured.

My first trip to China, and loving CNY in Beijing so far! Air quality and traffic both much better than I'd been led to expect, the fireworks are pretty and helping keep me awake long enough to reset my internal clock (not entirely successfully, as the timestamp on this shows), the fairs are fun and everyone seems in a great mood. Looking forward to the rest of the week.

Reminds me of the fun we had as a kid.

Now you would be locked up in prison for "terrorist act". No More Fun

We went to the yuanmingyaun 'temple' fair today. It was fun, but so utterly bitterly cold that we only last 1.5 hrs before calling it quits. My daughter clammmed up in shock to the cold...literallly as soon as we got into a cab she started jabbering away and saying she had fun...even though she just sat rigid in her stroller for the entire time!

Same here. Car alarms being set off left right and centre, with local apartment complex security looking on with glee. I've been hit by those firecrackers and it really hurts! A bit like being shot with a paintball gun. Fortunately it went fairly quiet at about 1am but started again at 7:30am the following morning!

Impossible.

Darwin award is granted only for death or sterilization.

Rather nice fireworks here in northern Shanghai last night. And safer to watch from a high floor hotel room... February 9th is the last day of this Spring Festival season?

Still plenty of fireworks going off around our complex during the evenings. However, the firecrackers going off at 7, 8 & 9am are now driving me, well................crackers

Ditto to that!

Today has been pretty bad: something to do with Guan Yu. My daughter is also losing her faith in my omnipotence since my telling the fireworks to "stop" have not been that successful.
