Yes, this is what I'm referring to as well. Speaking to a friend of mine who has recently gone through this process (although he's not American), it seems that there is inconsistent handling of visas, especially in Toronto, regardless of what the website says.
I was curious if anyone had actually done it recently in Toronto and was a US citizen.
I would like to go to China next year on a "real" trip, actually, but plans this year have me going to Tokyo and HKG over the two week Christmas/New Years break and so I won't have nearly enough time to do a real trip into China properly. So I'm relegated to a day trip or two.
The girlfriend and I are geeks and would like to see the electronics market in Shenzhen, if only for entertainment value. That was pretty much the point of the entire trip to Shenzhen. Is it really not worth it?
That said, I was inquiring about multi-entry as I would like to return within the next 12 months, but have no definite plans.
I am planning on going to Macau as well.
I had experienced inconsistency regarding what was on the website and what was actually procedure applied and also the forms on the website are not the ones acceptable at that time. On the website there is inconsistency between the Chinese and the English version of the same document. Other friends and relatives had same problems.

You are getting ahead of yourself, though. You need to go back and reassess your plans. I can't fathom why anybody in your shoes would be planning to make day trips back and forth from HKG to Shenzhen. If it's for shopping, don't bother. And there's nothing else in Shenzhen, it's a pit. If you want to see China, dammit, just go there rather than do multiple half-@ssed border skirmishes. For which you wouldn't need anything more than a single-entry. If you plan to--within a 12 month period--return to China beyond this RTW, then it makes sense to do the 12 month multiple. Or you could just save yourself the entire expense of the visa on this trip, and just plan to not go into China.

Meanwhile, I can't find info on the Macau Government site, but wikipedia says 76 million use the Gongbei port in 2006.
With more crossings opened between HK and China and more hotels and casinos completed in Macau since 2006...
Again, it is exactly because it's all foot traffic between Macau and China that so many people go back and forth each day, because there is ZERO cost. Unlike from HK, where you have to take the train, and it is not cheap. One stop from Sheung Shui to Lowu costs $19.5 using Octopus.
