Subway or maglev and subway combo are a much better choice and more consistent time wise in my opinion. To me even a crowded subway is better than a cramped bus.

I'm all for Maglev and subway. Here some points for the PVG arrived FT'er:

- Maglev also has a "first/VIP" class section. Very quiet and comfy, usually I'm the only passenger

- Prepare around 10 RMB in coins for each passenger before entering the subway. A lot of the ticket vending machines do not accept banknotes

- There is an outlet selling raliway tickets downstairs at the Maglev Longyang Rd. terminal. Quick, easy and only a 5 RMB service surcharge

- If going to Shanghai Railway station from Longyang Rd., switch to line 4 at Century Park.

- From Century Park line 9 heads first to Shangcheng Rd. in Lujiazui and then all the way to Xujiahui and further to the southern parts of Shanghai. Maybe you can avoid the line 1 migrant worker crowds through this...

- Line 6 gets you to the Pudong side Expo area among other destinations

- If going to Xintiandi, switch to line 10 at Nanjing East Rd. No point in dealing with the hassle at People's Square

I'm planning on trying the subway all the way on Monday: 1) so I'm in a position to opine on how much this option sucks or doesn't suck; and 2) to get another data point.

But, I'm hoping to switch to the SHA-HKG flight between now and then; I've heard awesome things about SHA T1.

77 minutes from JA Temple to PVG. I will not avail of this option again unless I happen to become dirt poor (in which case, I probably wouldn't be jetsetting anyway).

Try the Maglev to Subway combo on your way back if you fly into PVG. 44 RMB and never more than 50 minutes from PVG to Jingan. Be aware though that you'll never go back to your beloved bus after this! You have a choice of line 7 or line 2 at Longyang road station so pick the one that best suits your location. Line 7 is less crowded.

I've availed of all forms of transport, including both line 2 and line 7 Maglev journeys. What can I say? I still love the #2 bus.

1. Black MBZ or Audi
2. Taxi
3. Bus line 2
4. Maglev and metro
5. Last... metro line 2

Lots of black cabs here, make sure you jump into a legit one (see master transportation thread for which companies). And if you don't want to put up with the queue pressure of black cabs, find one of the legit companies waiting around the subway exits and not the maglev queue.

That's exactly what I was researching. I've been looking at the route times and cost here: http://www.exploreshanghai.com/metro/#

It says 73 min, 7/cost, but that's using the greenline out of the airport.

If you take the Maglev, you said it takes 50 minutes so I guess it saves about 20 minutes... Maglev costs 40 RMB?

Hey, I have a similar plan. I'm flying out of IAD to PVG, 4th, arrive the 5th.
Then leaving from PEK on the 15th.

I'm planning on staying @ the Hilton right by the Jing'an Temple metro stop.
Was thinking of doing taking the Maglev (40 RMB) --> Longyang Road (Green line). Then Subway the rest of the way to JA Temple (4 RMB).

Not really because the Maglev only runs 2 or 3 times per hour, so you need to factor in wait time.

Ah- was not aware of that! Is there a schedule somewhere?

I believe it runs at :00, :20, and :40 most of the time, and :00/:30 off peak.
