ASIs are not part of the Great American Security Machine, and it's unlikely any on duty would be patrolling the terminal.

The Aviation Security Inspector position has been renamed Transportation Security Specialist. Here's the position description:

TSA folks are paid on the SV pay scale.
Here's a job description mentioning SPOT, for a Master Transportation Security Officer:

I wonder what would have happened if the LEO's didn't come by. Would the "SPOT officer" have escalated the issue, or would he have tried to detain you (which he legally cannot do), or just eventually let you go?

Nicely done. Now, about the Diet Coke that just sprayed out of my nose . . .
Just curious . . . when he said "Excuse me sir." Would you have considered a different response, such as an abrupt, "Sorry, no, I don't have any spare change."? Or would that have been too obviously inflammatory. Sometimes I get carried away, but I amuse myself.

If you know him, the airport cops probably knew him, too. I wonder if this event will serve to water down his ego or add more fuel to the fire. Hmmmm.
Congrats on your 100th post. Let's make it 1,000!

SMF TSO:
I thought all airports had SPOT? Since TSA took over ID checking at all 450 airports, doesn't SPOT come hand in hand, as ID checkers are SPOTTERS too?
Unless I'm wrong...

ID checkers are not SPOTTERS. ID checkers are TSO's, screeners working at the CP's are TSO's. And no, not every airport has SPOT. BDO's are not TSO's, they do not function as TSO's (at least at my airport). They watch the people, and if someone draws their attention, that person needs to present a certain amount of "behaviors" in order for SPOT to pull them. The BDO's will do their thing, they preform their own bag checks, but they need a CP TSO to do the wanding/patdown. BDO's are not TSO's, but they do wear uniforms.
