n5667 makes a chilling point despite himself in his last post. Until MORE of the competent people DO leave TSA, the lines of oh, so many sheeple still willing to cueue up for their inane public humiliations will simply continue to multiply. We NEED to dumb down the TSA EVEN MORE until more Americans can see what is happening to them. Alas, it's apparently going to take more than a public slap in the face to wake them up.

For me, TSA was an impossibly bitter coffee.

The bottom line is that TSA is seeking ways to streamline the policy, and it boils down to this: remove all liquids from your carry-on and have them x-rayed seprately if the liquids, lotions, gels, pastes, creams, or aerosols are:
baby milk, formula or juices

prescription or non-prescription medicine

items essential for medical purposes such as water, juices or nutrient-enriched liquids for diabetics (but not limited to just diabetics)

travel-sized toiletries (including cosmetics) 3.4 ounces in volume that are packed inside a quart or liter sized re-sealable, transparent plastic bag (limit one bag per passenger).
Otherwise, the item is prohibited in carry-on luggage.

You no longer have to "declare" your items in that the TSO doesn't have to annotate on the back of your boarding pass what sort of items you're carrying. There will still be a "declarations TSO" located in front of the checkpoint; however, the purpose of having this individual is strictly informative. Yes, the TSO may make a determination if you have too much in that if you claim juice for your toddler but are carrying a case of juice as opposed to a few bottles/packages which would seem a more reasonable amount. (My recommendation is to ask for a supervisor if this happens.)

Sounds like there is a bit of sanity at least. One thought based on this list:

I take a medicine that needs to be mixed with approximately 8 ounces of water to take. Obtaining that in coach isn't the easiest thing--would packing enough 8 ounce water bottles for the flight be ok? Note, also, that the package labelling makes no mention of mixing it with water, it just says "as directed". (I've had previous labels that didn't even list the dose to be taken, just "take as directed".) The packet of fine print in the box does mention the water requirement.

I think your best and easiest, albeit not the most economical, option would be to purchase water when you get through security. Bring an empty container with measurements on it, if you need that accuracty, but just buy the water in the terminal.

Has anybody come up with a sane reason why this was thought necessary in the first place ? Apart from simple stupidity that is.

Is it okey to carry these items in carryon

I plan to fly pbi-bom on DL.
I will have some electronic items with me (laptop, digital camera, camera printer, cordless phone)
since these items are quite expensive for me i was thinking of carrying all these items in my carryon bag.
Can anyone confirm that all these items are allowed to carry on board.
Thanks.

I've carried all those things (laptop, camera, printer, phone) on with no problem. I think more gadgets increases your chances of getting pulled aside to have your stuff swabbed, but I dont think youll have a problem other than that with the items you mentioned.

Was there always supposed to be a TSO in front of the checkpoint dealing with liquids issues? I've seen these in SFO and SJC, but not in other places, so I had thought it was locally determined. (ORD in the example I gave above where my liquids were confiscated most certainly lacked one... I would have appreciated it a ton, since I could have gone back and gotten the correct bag from an airline desk before entering the checkpoint.)

This will cause the supervisor to at least check it out before making a final decision. The matter then comes down to determining how much is "enough 8 ounce bottles."

I'm curious to know how it works out for you.

I don't plan to travel until sometime early next year. The first flight is a short hop, the second leg is a transpac. That makes "enough" be 3 bottles.

I've had gadget piles cause the bag to be searched before. The various wires get in a mess and the x-ray guy can't see what he's looking at. That happened to me even before 9/11.

these should all be carry-on, per airlines instructions

All these items are allowed, and both binoculars and scope are also allowed. Airlines don't carry the liability insurance for a $2,500 spotting scope in checked baggage or any other highly valuable optical or electronics items. So they must be carred on. They may be swabbed, looked through, or (as happened to me in one case) the inspector may simply ask how I like the item's optics because he is thinking about buying one of his own. :)

Thanks to everyone for answers. now can you tell me how much extra time it might take for extra security checking.
I was planning to reach airport about 2 hours before the flight (from PBI to ATL and then to BOM in first week of dec). Will that be enough? or should i go earlier?

Thanks
