The end of carry on??

A recent threat from terrorists who claim they have non-detectable explosives that will fit into a cell phone or laptop has prompted the UK to consider banning all carry-ons for airplanes.

That could change the tone of the debate in many areas.

So why wouldn't this result in no luggage, period?

And naked flights. What fun!

Let's count the cliches:

1. Al Quada splinter group...

2. Non-metallic explosives...

3. Hidden in cell phones and computers...

4. Christmas doomsday attack...

5. Homegrown jihadists...

6. High-profile hit...

7. Airport security source...

8. Described the plot as "alive and real."

9. 9/11-style coordinated attack...

10. London and other major European cities...

11. High-level negotiations...

12. US intelligence officials...

13. Terrorist sleeper cells...

14. Vowing to smuggle bombs on planes...

15. Nonmetallic explosives...

16. Imminent attack against Western interests.

17. Terror ambitions...

18. Threat is more diverse...

19. Attacks in the West...

Did I miss any?

Practically every sentence in the article either contains a cliche or is a cliche.

I wish there was an emoji of exasperated head-shaking.

The end of carry on??

The article was from the Sunday Express, which few people in the UK consider a serious newspaper I can assure you! It's practically a tabloid.

This story hasn't had major exposure this side of the Atlantic.

The way things are going in Northern Ireland may shift a little focus this Christmas time...

Actually, I think the newspaper stole it from the TCPG.

And perhaps worse. If these "non-detectable" materials can fit into a cell phone, where else might they fit?

This is far more focused on travel security issues than general carry-on or TravelBuzz issues. I'll move to the appropriate forums. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, TravelBuzz.

I only found a few mentions of it in US "sources" but they're similar tabloid quality sites as well.

I just loved this quote from the Express article:

The source said..."All electronics may be banned from hand luggage and placed in the hold, that has been considered...
Put my cell phone, laptop, and reader in my checked bag? I may as well leave it on the sidewalk in front of the terminal.

Looks like FedEx will be getting a lot of my business if this happens. No way I am putting $20K of analysis tools in the hands of baggage handlers and the TSA guys in the basement.
