There are (inexpensive < $10) passport pouches, which you can wear hanging from your neck--easily concealed if you wear a sweater (or under your regular shirt); some have multiple compartments for holding (1)airline tickets, (2)train passes etc. Most come with a Velcro flap to protect the contents of the pouch.
For the last 10 years, I had been using an even cheaper version, but when the strap broke, I decided to "splurge" and buy the $8.99 one I am using now.

but what purpose do the scans/photocopies serve...has anyone ever had to use them?
My wife's passport was stolen a while back, having the photocopy to show the embassy speeded things up a bit.

Many hotels take copies of your passport anyway (including the American Colony in Israel). And given the Israeli government's misuse of UK passports you're screwed regardless

I used to carry mine on me at all times, but have since stopped and usually leave it in the hotel safe. I have a US and Irish passport, so if in a country that isn't as stable/safe as say Europe, I'll carry a copy of the Irish one, which is typically what I use to enter/exit most countries. Always either in front pocket or side cargo pocket (which had snaps and a zipper).

I also have scanned copies sent to an email account and all pertinent info, such as number, issue date, and expiration date memorized.

Maybe I'm out of touch, but I never thought of passport security like this. I have always left it in my bag at the hotel, and never had a problem. Heck, I've probably left it in my bag at hostels as well, although I try to remember to take it with me if there is no locker available. Maybe I'm just playing with fire, but I've never had a problem.

I have them myself but I'm not sure why
I've been told by several former associates at DoS that it can help the replacement or emergency travel doc process both abroad and trying to enter the US.

I never have had to use it (knock wood) and I have "lost", left, and had passports stolen several times though I have more than one so it was not as big a deal for me save for the longer replacment times on the Official ones versus tourist ones.

There is one episode of that Australian border security show, Front Line IIRC, where this elderly American tourist loses his passport somewhere on the plane flying in, and he has a copy of the photo page, which allows them to call the US Embassy to verify his ID, and they then stamp him in YMMV LOL

At home they stay locked up in our safe....it's not a snatch and grab model, it's built into the house foundation. Traveling out of the US we carry them in front pockets. When we cruise, especially in Europe, the cruise lines take your passport and keep them for the duration. And before anybody says "I'd never let them take mine!", it's very simple for them, they simply don't let you on the ship so you keep to have your passport in hand as they sail away with you standing on the dock.

Why do cruise lines keep passports for the whole trip? I've never been on a cruise.

I keep mine in the in room safe. If no safe, I will usually keep it on my person during the day and hidden in the room at night.

Only time I ever had a passport stolen it was pulled right out of my front pocket on the street late at night. I was quite drunk though.

The cruise ships are subject to inspection by port immigration and customs officials even if sailing within the EU. Our last Med cruise started in Barcelona and stayed within the EU for 13 of the 14 days. Our passports were obviously inspected in at least two ports as they were stamped in Naples, Italy and Piraeus, Greece.

Cruise ships keep passports to facilitate customs pre-clearance for their passengers. They don't like it but the cruise ships will provide you with your passport if you ask for it before going ashore. I do not go into foreign countries without my passport even on a cruise. My passport doesn't do me any good sitting in a hotel or cruise ship safe if I need it at the time.

Take two passports -- one for them to find, one for you to keep
