pre-check (pre-screen) requirements
reading the description, it seems it available to....
....TSA Pre✓™ includes U.S. citizens who are select frequent travelers of participating airlines.....
does anyone know what "select" frequent flyer implies here? e.g premier elite?
has anyone been turned down and why?
thanks

My mother has it on AA despite not having elite status with them. I don't know how that happened.

Several threads over in Practical Travel Safety Issues with lots of detail.
The nutshell version: eligibility comes via a Trusted Traveler program (Global Entry) or from an offer from a participating airline, usually given to elites.
However, eligibility does not mean chosen for precheck every flight. There is supposed to be some element of randomness.
My personal experience is, as a GE member, I am 100% with precheck. Anecdotal data from the other forum indicate access as an elite is less than 100%.

My parents who are Silver on UA have gotten Pre-check 100% of the time. However, due to TSA age requirements, those between the ages of 12 and 18 cannot go through Pre-Check (or so I have been told multiple times) so I have to go through the normal lane every time. It's very annoying for me

As long as you get the three beeps, there should be no reason to deny you access to the Pre line.

The thing that seems confusing is that United's website allows anyone with a frequent flier number to apply for precheck, while the other major airlines only invite elite members. Does United submit the non-elite members for pre-check, or is this just for show?

They don't give it out to anyone under 18, it's not that they refuse people entering the line.

I was able to get pre check 15-20 times before turning 18. I enrolled in Global Entry just before my 17th birthday and have, since then, been getting pre check almost 100% of the time.
