Solution found! Consistently failed precheck on United

So, my husband and I fly frequently on United, and we are both members of PreCheck. We noticed that neither of us ever got the three beeps of approval to enter the PreCheck line, and went to ask United about why. After getting the run-around from the 1K service phone line, from check-in agents, from numerous customer service people who all claimed that the problem was TSA didnt randomly select us for PreCheck (dozens of times in a row for people who belong to the program and get precheck consistently on every other airline? Sure.), we finally located someone who explained how to fix the problem on Uniteds reservation system!

And here, I pass that information to you. If youve been shut out of PreCheck on United, youve got quite a mission ahead of you. Fixing each reservation requires dogged persistence, because about 9 out of every 10 United employees has no idea what you are talking about and will shut you down with some vague blame-the-TSA nonsense. Dont believe it for a second. The problem is Uniteds reservation system.

First, this has absolutely nothing to do with whether your PASSID number is properly associated with your frequent flyer account or whether your frequent flyer number appears on that flight reservation. All those items were in line for us, and still we didnt get precheck. This problem is specific to and must be fixed at the level of each individual reservation record for each flight.

A quick glance at your reservation record will reveal whether the TSA precheck information got associated with this flight. There should be a line that reads

SSRDOCOUAHK1//K/123456789///US-1LASTNAME/FIRSTNAMEMIDDLEMRS

where the 123456789 is your PASSID number for TSA Pre-Check.

The letter K is for precheck (known traveler) and the letter R also sometimes appears there (which stands for a redress number, but relatively few travelers have those). We have been unable to understand why that line doesnt appear in so many of our reservations. The problem might have to do with third-party bookings as we travel on business. Or this might have to do with some name-matching issues relating to the middle initial/middle name/ no middle name or the Mrs/Ms/no salutation distinction.

To fix this, the agent should enter the GG Secure Flight screens. The line that should be changed is the G*103 line. This is the line that should contain your PreCheck passid number, but often doesnt.

Im posting an image of the screen that shows formatting instructions to fix the precheck entry. Here are the instructions, which are listed on
UA DATA PAGE SECURE FLIGHT CATOC SUB: GEN PGE:SCF

ADD THE APPROPRIATE NUMBER USING THE FOLLOWING SSR FORMAT:

3SSRDOCOUAHK1//K/123456789///US-1LASTNAME/FIRSTNAMEMIDDLESALUT
The 123456789 should be your PASSID number, and the FIRSTNAMEMIDDLESALUT needs to match the exact format of the name including MR or MRS for that particular reservation, or the system will reject the change. Accepted changes print an asterisk in response.

If there is an incorrect entry in the record, then that must be removed before the correct entry can be added. The way to remove an incorrect entry is to type 314□ hit enter, then type ER. Note that the open square box is actually a box with an x through it, but that special character doesnt appear in my fonts.

You can always decode the barcode on your boarding pass before you fly and see whether the magic precheck 3 is included in your boarding pass. However, weve never had success with updating a United reservation after a boarding pass was issued that might be too late to get into the precheck bucket.

To clarify: your first task is to find a United agent who is willing to take a look at the reservation in the Native SHARES system for you, and who will fix this problem where it exists.

As mentioned above, fully 9 out of 10 United employees will absolutely shut you down and refuse to help with this problem. I don't know whether it's that these people are lazy, or if they just have a completely false belief that TSA runs Pre-Check and therefore they as United employees can play no role in getting your Pre-Check information associated with your United reservation.

What we've had to do is keep asking. We call the helplines repeatedly, try to escalate to supervisors, try to explain what part of the record needs to be checked, et cetera. If someone is unwilling to help you, you just have to get yourself transferred to someone else. I'm not sure why there is so much resistance, but it's been an ordeal. We've had more luck with demanding help at the airport customer service desks than over the phone.

I found that i was getting Pre-check when I booked travel directly on the Conited website, but not when using my corporate (Carlson Wagonlit) system. I discovered that on UA's system, I just had my middle initial plus a period. On Carlson, I just had the middle initial with no period. So, I just edited both to add in my middle name - which wasn't an option many moons ago when I first registered on United - and since then, I've had Pre-check at IAD 100% of the time.

The reason most UA employees won't help is not because they don't want to help, it's a combination of having to use a POS IT infrastructure and a management team that has steadily and firmly limited the discretion of front line employees to do their jobs properly.

Thank you for the insight. I did find that even the people who wanted to help us fix the problem had a very difficult time figuring out how to do that. The agents have obviously never been trained in how the precheck information can be entered, and I don't understand why not.
