I always opt-out. My only secondary screenings of my bags have been for hard drives (18 in a single carry-on bag, fully expected this) and leaving a full, 20oz pepsi bottle in my bag.

and therefore the fact that it does happen to many people is therefore irrelevant? I guess they're just one-offs. Their bad luck to be at a particular airport with particular and evidently malicious staff.
