Close chase cards before apply?
I am interested in a new Chase card (50K Marriott) and possible other chase cards in the future. I currently have three open Chase cards (BA, CO and a Saphire). I'm not interested in keeping any of them open and would like them closed.
Is it better to close these cards before applying for the new one or is it better to apply, transfer lines around if needed and then close the previous three?
My credit is good. On a side note, I have received two Citi AA cards and a SPG card AMEX in the last couple of months if that matters.
Thanks

My own experience with Chase has been that the latter case (apply, close the old one, and get a new one) works better.

I'm going to wait until I hear if I'm accepted or declined. If declined, I'll give them a call and try and close some to get accepted. That seems to work for most. If I'm accepted, then I'll give them a call in a few weeks and then close the ones I'm not using.

Csncel Chase card before applying new??
Hello,
I have 5 Chase cards, and planning to apply a new one (or two). My last application was about 30 days ago (BA 50K+50K). Seems like I will get denied this time and will need to call to close one of the cards or swap credit line. Should I cancel a card to free up the credit line before applying a new one so I don't get denied?
Thanks.

I agree with the above advice. I have been explicitly told by a Chase agent that if I cancel, it can take a couple months before the credit limit that was on the cancelled card becomes available for new apps.
So you never want to cancel outside of the application process unless you don't expect another application (with the same bank) for a couple months.

Chase - Proactively close or just reallocate?
I'm pretty sure I've hit my total credit line limit with Chase as now I have to call and beg them to reallocate credit every time I apply for a new card. On my most recent app they actually insisted that I close one of my cards in order to approve the new one.
My question is, should I just start slowly closing out my Chase cards that I don't use in order to make things smoother for new applications in the future, or would I be better off just waiting until they tell me to cancel a card? I'd like to eventually get the Ink Plus and Sapphire Mastercard but I have a feeling all these non UR cards will be getting in the way later (Southwest, etc.).
