Honduras in September
Planning to go to Honduras in September (3rd week).
Is travelling by bus the only long-distance mode of public transportation? For some reason, we don't feel like renting a car as we usually do. What are the roads like? Would any FT recommend renting a car?
We would love to see the Copan Ruins. Any other sites that would be recommended?
Would very much appreciate advice from FT's who have been there.
Muchas gracias!

If you just travel between the airport and Copan Ruinas, you should be fine renting a car. The other option is to book a private tour with someone there. It might not be much more than you'd pay on your own with a car and hotel because they get better rates on the latter and have their own vehicles. I used these guys a few years ago when on a writing trip: http://www.mctours-honduras.com/Corp...-MC-Tours.html

www.hedmanalas.com bus lines is the way to go ^
And yes, I've tried them as well as regular a/c bus
Already mentioned in a recent thread, a very comfortable way to go.
Ruinas Copan are interesting, but you could also go to the coast to La Ceiba, possibly take a boat to Roatan Island, depending on how much time you have.
The cities tend not to be very interesting, though of San Pedro Sula and Tegulcigalpa I've only visited former.

bus is good. if you are two or more, taxis may work. Three of us took a cab from Tela to San Pedro Sula for less than the nice bus. We also flew from San Pedro Sula to Roatan and bused it between Copan and San Pedro sula.

I agree with using Hedman Alas. It is Honduras's best bus line and they are a good way to get around between major points.
If you are the least bit prone to motion sickness, I would not attempt the boat ride between La Ceiba and Roatan this time of year. It can be very choppy.
