LOST BAGGAGE - Now what ?

Hi All,

Anyone had their bags declared "LOST" recently. I checked in my bags (3pcs) LAS-HKG (AA/CX) and arriving here in HKG the bags didnt show. A day later they found 2pcs and had them sent to me, but the 3rd one is still missing 3 days later. So CX (being the last carrier so stuck with the responsibility) has to now deal with my claim.

1) Anyone done a claim of this sort recently. What kind of maximum compensation are we entiltled too (i'm sure they would have a ridiculas MAX. CAP).

2) Does status Help in this case ?

3) Do you need receipts for amoounts claimed ?

4) any loop-holes or tricks of the trade are welcome via PM.

I look forward to hearing your commments, this is my 1st time I've had a bag LOST so never claimed before, any experience would be helpful.

You don't have much to help you here. I think the max compensation is usd 20 per kg. You might be able to claim from your credit card company if they offer insurance as a benefit.

Officially according to the Geneva Convention which regulates most rules on international air travel, it is true that airline is only liable for US$20/kg. However, having said that, most airline will offer you a bigger amount then that, especially if you complain. In situations like this, it is important to raise the issues or else, US$20/kg will be all you gonna get. CX lost my mother bag once, and she got a US$800 dollar compensation for it... although, that barely covers her expensive suitcase... but that's more then the norm... so it really depends on how much you are willing to raise the issues to the higher level managers at CX who has more power to give a higher compensation. Also, complaining to Marco Polo Club help as well.

Note: I am not encouraging people to complain, but sometimes that's the only way to go. Once an airline loss your bag, they are now in defensive mode to minimize their compensation. Even CX do that.
