LAS-HKG Getting on Airport Waitlist for Y>J

Waitlisted for upgrade on 10/17 CX 883 using AMs. Told by AM it doesn't look good and that waitlist will be cancelled day before flight. Is there an airport waitlist and how do I get on it before check-in?

In SYD, if I know that Y class is not full (so, no op-up chances), I just go straight to the CX information desk to ask for availbility for upgrade by miles. Then, they check the computer and say "yes, there are still some seats for instant upgrade. The miles required is 25,000 miles, and you have enough miles. Would you like to upgrade now?" I say "Yes". Then they type some information to the computer and bring me across to their check-in counter and check-in as usual. But you need to check if the computer in LAX can do instant upgrade. I know that some destination cannot do this, I think due to technical constraint etc...

Okay so I sigend up and checked CX 882:

CX 882
0 HKG
10/22/06 04:15 PM LAX
10/22/06 02:30 PM 74J
M F4 A4 J3 C2 D1 I1 Y8 B8 H8 K8 M8 L5 V5 S2 N2 Q2 O2

So if I understand this correctly Business Class seats are: C, D, I, J, and therefore there are 7 seats available 10 days out from departure which means little chance of upgrade exepcially since I am only MP Green and CX 884 leaving 3 hours earlier is sold out in business.

Thanks!

that actually means there are only 3 seats in Business. The full fare letter always tells you how many seats are on the plane total since it is the last bucket that gets depleated (i.e. buying a D fare will also probably decrease J by 1).

There are 3 seats left in Business class. CX sells 3 seats on full fare Business (J). CX also agrees to sell 2 out of 3 Business seats at a discounted price (C). And agrees to sell only 1 out of 3 seats in more-discounted price (D and I).
