Is this a typical Asiamiles redemption experience?
Hey there CX pros. I've been casually collecting Asiamiles via various partner offers for a few years. I recently received a last minute invitation to a wedding in London (I'm based in YVR).
I have no misconceptions about the ability to book last minute rewards with any program, but thought I would try a Hail Mary, and give Asiamiles a shot.
On August 8th I called the toll-free number on my card to inquire about the (admittedly slim) possibility of booking YVR-LHR-YVR via BA in early Sept. A recorded voice told me that the customer service people were too busy to take my call, and that I should try again later (I'm paraphrasing here). I tried later, same message. I tried again the next night, same message. Finally I gave up.
Out of curiousity more than anything, I decided to fill out the online award request form on the Asia miles website. 15 days later I received notice that they were unable to accomodate my request.
I guess I'm wondering if this is a typical experience, or did I just catch them on a bad week? In general terms, how is award availability for a basic member like me, both on CX and their partner airlines?
Thanks...

Hey Joe
I've hardly ever had luck with last minute request, but as for contacting them by phone, do it before 10am (HK time) or after 4pm - I've found that the telephones are pretty jammed up in the middle of the day.
The problem with the online request is that you don't get the AM / MPC people offering you alternatives. If it's not too late, give it another shot and try call first thing in the morning. I've found that they are mostly really helpful (and very apologetic if they can't accomodate your request).
Cheers

Although I've never really tried redeeming Asiamiles online, I never have a problem with getting through to them on the phone. I'm usually calling them from India on an international toll-free number which connects me in Hong Kong.
Maybe you could try calling that number, even though it's in HKG. Actually, are you an MPC member as well, or just AM? I usually use the MPC number...
There's a link somewhere on the website indicating general availability for redemption as well...

hey there surlyjoe ... i have to say your experience is probably quite representative of redemption experience by non CX elites. finding reward tickets online is pointless, i'd say 99% of the time your desired flights are unavailable.
agree with the other posters, call the AM / MPC tollfree line, and ask for alternatives. the CSR will (moderately gladly) check other dates / flights for you.
