Waitlist for CX831

We are currently on CX889 JFK-HKG booked in A class on a RTW ticket.
When making the reservation, I asked to be put on the waiting list for the 831 direct flight. We are flying out on a wednesday in May. What are the chances that 2 A class seats will open up by then? Should I periodically call CX or will they call us?

In my expeience, there's little or no chance that CX will reallocate A seats for 830/831 until 7-14 days before the flight, and even then don't bet on it. Flying back from HKG earlier this month (I had a reservation on 888 but wanted to fly on 830), they wouldn't make 1 seat available in advance even though only 4 of 8 seats had been sold/reserved. However, it was no problem to get the F seat on the day of the flight when I showed up and asked to get on 830.

As soon as CX announced the CX 830/831 flights, I tried to get an "A" seat. None were available and I was waitlisted, which cleared about a week later, some five months before the flight. This all happened back in March before the flight started, so things may have changed.

In any event, I wouldn't be too upset if you don't get on CX 831. While not a bad flight, I did not find it up to the usual CX standards. I wrote a report about it. You can do a search under my name in Trip Reports if you are interested.

It depends on your status with Oneworld. It helps to be Emerald but that is still not a guarantee. CX is hoping to sell full J or F fares on this route instead of the discounted fares. Trust me, there are still people out there who do buy F and J fares without much of a blink of an eye, especially out of HKG.

One of those people sat next to me in F on the 16th HKG-JFK. He bought his ticket an hour and a half before the flight. I was only able to get a seat assigned to me (travelling in A class) the day before. Flight went out with 2 empty seats in F.

I also agree with PresRDC that the flight is not up to CX's usual standards but still better than most other carriers. Krug and caviar were available also.

Roundtrip from HKG in F on CX: HKD $ 82,910.00 before taxes which equals to :

USD $ 10,630.00 !

He didn't tell me what he paid but he did say he purchased (specifically said he wasn't using points) the ticket that morning. Trip wasn't even for business but was a spur of the moment family visit. I mentioned to him about RTW tickets and he said he often used them for his family members.

A much better than some AA F fares. Like JFK-LHR at $12857.03 r/t (incl taxes) for just 3452 miles each way. That's 20% more money for less than half the distance flown. And surely less than half the service quality -- 0% as much caviar, 0% as many down comforters, etc.

$10k for the CX flight seems like a regular bargain in comparison!

I read your report last July (or August?). It's a shame that on the direct route that service is slipping, but I guess that's what you get for the longest or second longest flight in the world. I'll wait out the 831, but I won't cry if I don't get it, after all, it's still CX!
