You leave very late, arrive early and lose an hour en route due to the time difference. Factor in the noise of announcements etc. before takeoff and landing and you'd be very lucky to get more than three and a half hours of kip. So if sleep is important, I'd avoid the overnight flights on this route..
Agreed - the redeyes from HKG to Japan (NRT and KIX) are just brutal. Heck 3.5hrs of sleep is usually an overstatement: sometimes the wheels up flying time for HKG-NRT are not even 3.5hrs (HKG-KIX sometimes less than 3). I found these flights to be good for connecting to the US (where you would just sleep most of the transpac flight), but for Japan-bound pax they are really brutal.

That's the definition of redeye

If you don't think that's a proper redeye, then what is a proper redeye in your opinion?

it's moving off-topic but for me a redeye is an overnight flight with suboptimal but passable sleeping time, commonly coast to coast in the States.

Then what would you call a 3-3.5h overnight flight departing at 1am and arriving at 6am? A maroon-eye? These are quite common in the US too on midcons, e.g., LAX-ORD/DFW/IAH.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-eye_flight.

In commercial aviation, a red-eye flight refers to a flight that departs at night and arrives the next morning, especially when the total flight time is insufficient for passengers to get a full night's sleep
In this case, 3.5 hour is egregiously bad.

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us...nglish/red-eye
A red-eye or a red-eye flight is a plane trip during the night

designating a late-night or all-night commercial airline flight

a commercial airline flight between two distant points that departs late at night and arrives early in the morning
Iin this case, still qualifies as a (bad) redeye flight.

Still haven't decided what to do for the 2 passengers

having done both i would say i go with CX

IFE - cx wins
seat - CX wins (cirrus not 777 regional)
lounge - CX wins
Food - Jal is moonlight ahead, but i think the reality is CX is 3 generation behind competition

also Jal has way too many courteous Japanese style PA greeting for every bumps or minor items. they interrrupt IFE too much

i also didnt get any OwE greeting nor water bottle or any other "recognition"

JL food is way better than CX. Service is "different" between both airlines. Seat and IFE, CX is ahead (way ahead on the IFE). And lastly, JL planes tend to get better gate assignments in Japanese airports, and CX planes get better gate assignments in HKG. Depends what kind of slick entry process you possess, arriving in HND/NRT/KIX behind a 787 from Manila or Kazakhstan full of "entertainers" can set you back a couple of hours at immigration.

Is it just me or does that look mediocre? I've had better food on NH for sure.

Completely subjective btw.

Hi,

I will be doing the red-eye ( HKG-KIX ) in just over a fortnight in J
0150 leaving HKG, arriving KIX 0630 ( then going to Kyoto) having arrived from LHR at 1750
Depending on the weather I will probably go landside in HKG, take the airport express to Kowloon , ride the star ferry and see the lights at the harbour then back to HKG, shower at one of the CX lounges, have a late dinner then try to sleep right after take off

Regards

TBS
