That's great, as long as they don't penalize members who do earn miles from flying.

Its 5 years since the chart was 'adjusted' and during that period many airlines have increased the number of points required for reward tickets some by as much as 60%. Some of the latest are United, (May) BA , Iberia, Air Lingus, Qantas.
Since the pandemic airfares have increased significantly and thus it follows so will the real cost of reward travel.
As was noted above long-haul flights in economy to most of the most sought after destinations have in fact reduced by 10% and on many routes around Asia points required are unchanged while others have increased requirement.
No one likes to pay more but this was ,after 5 years reasonable and bound to happen I believe.

I don't doubt anyone would begrudge this devaluation inevitability based on how CX's competitors are trending. But the way they've approached this whole devaluation has left a bitter taste in the mouth. Just in June 2023, they've introduced a 10% bonus for people to convert their points to AM, which people would be incentivized to do. But they announced the devaluation right after that promo ended in July, but before the 10% bonus is received, claiming the new rates would be effective from 1 October but effectively zerorized any meaningful J and F longhaul availability until then. All this while claiming that they're "confident that their approach will deliver more value to customers". This makes them come across as tone deaf, conniving and, ultimately, untrustworthy.

To be devil's advocate, at least they gave 3 months notice. Recent devaluations from Alaska, Virgin, and United were no notice, and I think Emirates gave less notice for their partner devaluation.

They zeroed out inventory on routes that we actually like shortly after they announced the devaluation. To me, that's effectively the same as "no advance notice".

Or did they get redeemed ?

It's a little difficult to "proof" such a statement, not to say, I'd not be surprised, when a lot of people just booked their intended flights asap, immediately after the announcement was published. Not to say, I did do the same.

Not to say, because nowadays it's only possible to search for awards when being logged in, I do have the impression, CX does limit the number of award tickets one can buy per person... After the first award was bought, further availability seems to have disappeared suddenly.

The bad thing on the whole seems to be, they (and not only CX) seemed to have sold huge amounts of credit-card sourced miles, without increasing the availability accordingly.

Of course it's impossible to prove that they are deliberately trying to screw their members, but they have the means to open award inventory if that's the priority they claim it is.

Suckers. The real pros keep them in a convertible currency, then open a new thread here every time the transfer is less than instantaneous.

So glad I burnt hundreds of thousands of miles last year and earlier this year. I will simply pay for business class when I really have to fly with CX as there are so many better options out there without having to go through Hong Kong with its lousy transit security lines and crappy lounges offering below par food and service.

Managed to rack up 2.3 million miles with them in the last ten years and that includes zero flights during covid.

At least i have good memories of what this airlines used to me like when the staff were proud to work for CX and service was everything.

I can attest, as a GO, I had not had more than a few minutes' wait when calling CX since earlier this year (2021~2022 was a different story). Right now, though, I'm waiting in the line, and it has been 1.5 hours (as I'm also trying to redeem a oneworld multi-carrier award). CX is definitely having a lot more calls now.

Edit: At the end it took me 2.5 hours to be connected, but the itinerary desired was booked and confirmed valid :).

During COVID was the best time to redeem. Plenty of availability and with the increase in cash prices the value was amazing. Must have gotten close to $100,000 USD worth of flights during those 2 years.

Increases in my credit card bill because of inflation will probably balance out the increase in miles required now🤣🤣

I’ve checked everyday for June / July 2024 as the calendar opens day by day. Zero availability for TPAC flights. Definitely zeroed out or blocked availability to book in J. Hopefully they will do a mass release of awards but I’m not holding my breath.

I noticed something similar EU-Asia, though my interpretation is, CX does not release awards at 360 days out, but only for something like maximum 300 days out. That was already before the inflation triggered devaluation.

percysmith Jul 9, 2023 9:59 pm

No, there are 360 day releases. Search FUK-HKG.

Yeah, or maybe only the low-demand routes do get 360 days award releases.

For my routes, there was >1 availability in March-May 2024, but zero availability May-July. I do expect that to turn up later.
