Is award availability just nonexistent right now?

I managed to redeem a one way business class ticket last week ,europe to s e asia. But only by pulling several strings of people who work at cx. They basically said its almost impossible to redeem even for DM.

Not the first time I heard of this, the last time is not a redemption ticket but an arrivals capped-flight to Australia in 2020.

Award availability does exist even on Cathay's most popular routes
Although it may be scarce, award availability does exist even on Cathay's most popular routes. I got an award seat for my dad in business class on CX252 next month from LHR-HKG and also managed to find return availability in PE via Paris.
I guess CX's algorithms automatically release a small number of award seats on at least some flights? If that's true, then there will hopefully be more awards being released soon--as CX will presumably be expanding their number of flights in response to the easing of quarantine restrictions in Hong Kong.

The last miles we managed to burn were for 4x pax in biz Europe -> Asia on AY, booked in Q1 this year (May have been Jan) for flying in Aug. Tried to see if I could move the date for 1x pax recently, looked on many routes with many carriers on many dates (+/-10d), virtually no cigar. Looked extremely dry to me. Glad we burned all of our remaining AsiaMiles with this ticket.

Just by checking the website everyday for a few days. I booked in June for flights in September/October (so 3-4 months out) and saw a bit of award availability scattered around here and there. But of course you have to act fast if you see anything worth booking, as generally it would be gone within a day or so.
