Baggage allowance and transit experience at BNE

I have an itenerary SYD-BNE-HKG with a 2.5 hour connection at BNE. SYD-BNE is with QF and BNE-HKG is with CX. I want to confirm that the following
1) 2.5 hours should be enough to transfer from domestic to international terminal
2) our bags can be through checked at Sydney domestic airport to HK.
3) if our bags can be through checked, do we just exit the building and hop on the bus to international intemrinal knowing that the luggages will be transferred to CX plane without any issue? Any way to check with CX whether the luggages have arrived at the aircraft?
4) the economy baggage allowance is per CX policy. I am OneWorld Emerald so when i travel CX i can bring 3 check in bags (55 kg in total) and 7kg hand carry.

I tried to call the CX hotline but have been put on hold for 30 minutes. Thought it would be easier to get my answers here in the forum.

Thanks for your help.

Are both flights on the same ticket or 2 separate tickets?

If one ticket
  1. Yes
  2. Yes
  3. Yes. Get on the bus.Keep your QF boarding pass
  4. Extra baggage will be as the Oneworld policy for emerald. If CX have more for its own freq flyers that is nothing to with QF

If 2 separate tickets
  1. Should be OK if QF is on time. QF will not protect on separate tickets. But I would not have any less and preferably more time on separate tickets as the consequences are high
  2. QF will not interline on separate tickets QF to CX. An exception with awards. You will need to take the bags to BNE international terminal and check in. Will take extra time over than if bags were interlined
  3. Yes Get on the bus.Keep your QF boarding pass
  4. Extra baggage will be as the Oneworld policy for emerald. If CX have more for its own frequent flyers that is nothing to with QF

Thanks for the quick reply!

More info and questions:
1) I booked the ticket through CX.com so the QF flight is marketed as CX####, followed by CX flight BNE-HKG as CX### so that means they are on the same itinerary?
3) Thanks for the info. Can we go to the boarding gate area and ask CX agent if our bags have arrived at the CX aircraft?
4) Does that mean I need to follow the QF baggage policy for Emerald on domestic flight when i check in at SYD, when the two flights are on the same itinerary as mentioned as above?

  1. That would be the same PNR/ticket so good to go
  2. answered
  3. No idea if the gate agent will know, You can ask. Highly likely the gate agent will not be CX employee but dnata, Menzies or QF, depending who does CX ground handling. Would not be concerned myself
  4. How much over the ticket & OW emerald benefit will you be? Normally the ticketed allowance does not include extra from status. No idea if the QF domestic check-in will allow more than OWE extra without a fee. Would expect them only to offer as Oneworld policy

Thanks Mwenenzi!!

I checked QF website that i can only bring 2 x 32kg bags as oneworld emerald when travelling on qantas domestic flight so i am not sure if they will follow CX rules (3 bags totalling 55kg) when i have a CX connecting flight on the same itinerary.

Sounds like i need to re-pack my stuff into 2 bags so that it fits both allowances.

You could ask QF on twitter or email [email protected]
As an international itinerary would expect the international rules apply and not the domestic baggage rules (but I am not QF)
2 x 32 kg (64kg) is not that far from 3 with total 55kg

Look at notes 36 & 37

Been there done that
Not really necessary. You can ask, but as Mwenezi says I doubt CX BNE will answer.
I didn't ask and just walked straight in.

(but I am not QF)

Base: per CX 2pcs, 30kg total
As elite: 1 additional piece of 23kg https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-...world-partners (argurable)
(I think ernestnywang's analysis is better than mine)

As you are on one ticket, the entire ticket follows CX's economy bag allowance, i. e., 30kg, which should be an integral part of your CX-160 e-ticket. As a oneworld emerald, you are entitled to 20kg extra per https://www.oneworld.com/travel-benefits#benefits as pointed out, since this ticket follows the "'weight' system." That's a total of 50kg, not 55kg. The 3pc part per https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_...#OnMostFlights, on the other hand, is not an integral part of the ticket. However, since QF doesn't limit the number of pieces when using the "'weight' system," per https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-...gage%3Aen%3Ann, I don't see any reason why QF will not let you check 3 pcs as long as the total weight doesn't exceed 50kg and as long as no bag exceeds 32kg. QF's policy for domestic checked bag allowance doesn't apply since you are connecting to an int'l flight on the same ticket.

For carry-on, you have to follow QF's rule for the QF flight. Again, per https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-...age-%3Aen%3Ann, 7kg shouldn't be a problem.

Just took my flight SYD-BNE-HKG.

The check in staff at SYD said there is no priority baggage for OWE unless travelling on business class. She also offered to put us on an earlier flight as there was a storm at sydney in the evening.

At BNE lounge there is a ground staff representing CX asking us for our baggage receipt and confirmed that our bags have arrived at CX aircraft so really a thumbs up!!!

How was your baggage allowance when checking in for QF?

CX probably handled your bag as OWE (First) priority even if it wasn't given priority on the QF side (did your bags arrive in HKG with First tags?)

I didn't know there was a carve out of OWE priority baggage handling for Qantas domestic flights - is there (or was the agent mistaken?)?

I, as an OWE, have had Priority tags slapped on bags by QF when travelling in coach.
