FWIW the typhoon killed 34 people in the mainland, who don't have the same system of shutting down when a big typhoon moves through.

I think you'll find that most of those people died because a very shoddily built building that they were sheltering in fell down. That is a completely different issue.

Guy Betsy, could you post a trip report on your CX 839 flight ?!! i'm very interested in knowing what happens on a CX plane when it's only an hour from HKG and gets diverted. what happens to the pax on the plane once the plane lands @ the diverted airport etc. the closest i came to flying in during a typhoon is coming in 1 day before T9 was put up in 1997. AC007 which left a few hours before your flight also got diverted to TPE too.

You're right, it is a different issue. In a downtown area of a modern city, the likelihood of a building collapse is much smaller, probably nearing zero.

The biggest risk in an urbanized area is often flying objects -- windows, debris, etc. In areas with tall building, the wind tunnels created by the synergy of the weather and the topography created by the buildings themselves can become extraordinary. It's also extremely difficult to predict: you might have winds >100km/h on one blocks, while it's no more than breezy 3 blocks away.

Those who pay little heed to the forces of Nature do so at their own risk.
