AA and CX are oneworld partners so they should have no problems doing that. I flew on AA and connected on OZ(AA partner) and they trasferred my bags with NO problems at all. I have also done this with other arlines.. such as flying Delta - BUF-ATL-PDX-NRT.. and United NRT-SEL. THe bags were trasfeered.

If you are connecting from an international flight to another international flight, generally you don't have to collect your bags. If you are transferring from CX to AA, things might be a bit different specially if you have to clear US customs in between. You have to claim your bags and then clear US immigration and customs before proceeding to your AA flight.

you shouldnt have any problems checking through to the final destination. although you will still need to collect boarding passes.
one word of caution - if you are travelling from Asia to the US and your connecting AA flight happens to leave earlier than the departure time of your CX flight make sure they put the right date for the connecting flight.
and as rightly mentioned above, you will need to claim your bags at the first point of entry into the US and clear customs. but at most major airports AA will have a baggage re-check area right after customs - and your bag will already have the tags attached so you jst put it onto the belt.

I flew HKG-NRT-SJC November 99 with the HKG-NRT on Cathay and the NRT-SJC on AA. Checked in at HKG and picked up my luggage at
SJC no problems. In October 99, I flew
SJC-NRT-HKG-MNL (going for a oneworld promo to fly different carriers) with the SJC-NRT on AA, NRT-HKG on CX, then HKG-MNL on British Airways. Since our schedule for arriving into HKG was late at night, we had to spend the nite at the airport to catch the British Airways flight the next morning. CX in NRT realized that and did a special for us by checking our bags all the way through to Manila, so we wouldn't have to pick them up at Hong Kong since we were catching the next flight out in the morning. Technically speaking, we were required to pick up our bags in Hong Kong since we were considered to be there overnite. The lounges and the "plat" status were lifesavers for that trip (myself, wife, and 2 year old). Sometimes you'll get favors like that if you get a reasonable minded counter person. Thanks again Cathay.
