I know what you mean, which OP could potentially get about 4K redeposited.

But given that OP did travel in J for USA-HKG, which costs the same mileage as USA-(HKG)-SGN, it will be difficult to convince AA for a prorated refund.

There's no refund from AA for the downgrade on the intra-regional flight.
