Can't upgrade codeshares

Called into MPC to process an upgrade for CX5809. Two different agents told me that codeshares can't be upgraded and that I had to book under KA809 and then the upgrade would work. Is that correct advice and/or a new policy?

So I changed the flight from CX5809 to KA809 and had to pay some minor tax difference during reissue.

Then, I could process the upgrade.

Has anyone encountered this issue before?

Yea, all the time. Has been going on as long as I can remember. I can't remember for what but there are other reasons too. Seems so dumb to me considering it's one freaking company! You generally gotta call a few folks and beg someone to reticket it under the correct #.

I called CX in HK at 27473333 (it was a ticket I bought online) and they were able to reissue with the correct flight number without any hassle, except I had to pay the difference in taxes, which was the price of a cup of coffee.

But yeah, it's utterly baffling that they have this restriction in the first place.

I wonder if this also affects other things like op-up chances for codeshare pax.

What is the benefit we are getting for booking into flights like CX5809 instead of KA809?

No benefit for us. This is the default when you book on cathaypacific.com for a longer itinerary involving both KA/CX and where the first sector is on KA metal. In this case for first sector you can't even choose KA code, you have to book under CX code. Then if you want to change, call into CX and reissue and pay the tax difference (if any at the time of reissue).
