You also must remember The Pier is technically a secondary lounge. It is not intended to compete with the LH FCT, yet it still does. |
I do HKG SFO in CX and SQ first pretty frequently.
The CX seat is still the widest seat out there in first at 36 inches wide and the Wing has the best bathroom/showers (cabanas) of any first class lounge. They server caviar in F and the Chinese food especially flying out of HK is very good JAL first has better food but seat is not as wide as CX. Plus CX has only 6 seats in first in 777 so is pretty private . The Haneda lounge is very good...has a John Lobb Shoe Polish Room which is kinda unique but its the same league overall as the wing sq on the 777 seat wise is not as good as CX even though the IFE is better. Food is comparable. QR first IMHO is not in the same class as CX..its not private at all and seats are not as wide for sleeping is CX first the best..no..etihad apartment is but is it in the top 5 first classes...absolutely. To me there are only three First class cabins better than CX....1) etihad apartment 2) sq suites 3) LH on 747 F with seat and a bed. You could argue that asiana suites and ANA suites are better. I cant speak for asiana suites on the 380 but rate the ANA in the same class as CX, and JAL |

What you mean with secondary lounge? Or which lounge you think is the "primary"?

The QR setup, which reminded me of CA's setup, just the amount of foot traffic through the cabin probably will not allow me much sleep. Pass. |

The Wing is the flagship F lounge for CX, with its larger size and location right after security. The Pier just happened to have been refurbished in the new style first.

Does the Pier have those as well? Maybe I should try it |

Wing F - 1697 Wing J Upper - 1935 Wing J lower - 1002 Pier F - 2061 Bridge - 2567 Cabin - 1400 The Pier feels smaller to me, but i guess that's the intention.

I always go to the Wing. The SFO flight goes from a gate next to it . generally gate 4. Never been to the Pier. Wing has a dedicated first class area and the Cabana suites.

I think how you view premium cabins tend to depend upon what you use them for. If you use them, like I do, as a means of getting from A to B with as much sleep and rest as possible then CX wins hands down. If you want an "experience" with bells and whistles and you don't get to fly in the "pointy end" that much then perhaps CX wouldn't be your first choice.
CX regular "Firsties" know what we want and CX delivers it consistently and perhaps just as importantly across a wide route network. |

Cathay First is overrated
Unlike sebastiansw3 & QRC3288, F is an occasional indulge-experience for me n wifey- one where we look forward to a good longhaul flight, some bells n whistles (but not the over the top kind), and a bit of sleep. J is a 'need' (& CX J works very well for us), like on 1 week US trips from SIN with 3-4stops in the U.S.
Even with that, I'd take CX F over SQ F/Suites (primary comparison as I'm ex-SIN) in a blink any day, & twice on Sundays. I'm not Chinese, but am quite partial to CX's Catering in F. The seat is great- works brilliantly for a couple of movies with stuff that I like to drink (in fact the only time I've been outright drunk was on CX F..I blame CX crew for having a bet on how drunk they could get me on that one..vaguely recall meeting kaka @HKIA post that flight)- and then gently easing into the best sleep I get on a plane - my definition of a perfect flight.. (personal sleep record: ~14hrs un-interrupted on HKG-JFK, but that was after a vey rough week). Yeah the IFE could be better, but we're talking 99 vs 99.5 percentile. |
