Umbrellas
I just read this article today in the South China Morning Post regarding checks for umbrellas in hand baggage at BJS:

I have gone through BJS three times in the last 30 days and on each occasion I have been asked to remove my small folding umbrella from my carry on bag and open it fully. What's more, on each occasion the official at the X ray machine was very aggressive, which is unusual in my experience. I have carried a small umbrella in my hand baggage for years and have never been asked to even identify it before.......So maybe, as the article says, the Umbrella Revolution is indeed making everyone nervous !

It is really up to the local tsa to decide, but local check-in staff would follow local rules.
LHR's CX check-in staff asked me to check-in "long umbrella" as a hold baggage, citing tsa would not let me bring it through security.
So when I bought a long umbrella in Japan, at NRT, I was naturally expecting check-in staffs to ask me to check-in my umbrella as hold baggage, but they smiled at me and said, there is nothing stopping me to carry a long umbrella on to the plane myself. They were correct, NRT tsa didn't say anything at all.

Often when I go on a long trip, inevitably, I end up buying an umbrella of some sort. I've never had a problem bringing these onto my flights back and they're not even the small ones. I prefer the long ones that that can double as a nice walking stick (it helps if it's wooden with leather wrapped handles 
)

I flew out of PEK last week, although on NH (not CX) and I was also asked to remove my small folding umbrella from my carry on. I thought it was a bit odd at the time, especially since there was nothing on the many signs before, and at the entrance to, security regarding umbrellas (laptops, liquids etc were all mentioned).

May be umbrella is officially classified as an "offensive weapon" (just kidding)
well... it's a matter decided by the Security not the airline. So may be LHR doesn't allow a long umbrella while NRT allows. Anyway who needs an umbrella on board unless one is flying on Qantas A380

well... it's a matter decided by the Security not the airline. So may be LHR doesn't allow a long umbrella while NRT allows. Anyway who needs an umbrella on board unless one is flying on Qantas A380

I think Chinese TSA started xraying the carry on umbrellas in August, but it was not enforced straightly at that time. Then came Sep, it became compulsory to screen separately.

FWIW, Umbrellas are prohibited in carryon baggage in Phils (since at least 5 yrs ago). Never knew nor asked why. After "donating" a few to the security folks, I've been trained to put it in my check-in bag all the time now.

In Australia, umbrellas are allowed onboard, but one must have them screened separately (ie. take out of carryon bag).
