Excerpt from an e-mail I received back from MPC on an (eventually successful) attempt to use an upgrade certificate:
"I regret that our staff was not able to
explain the conditions of use of the Upgrade Certificate clearly. Allow
us to clarify that the certificate needs to be presented when you
approach the check-in counter. The seat controller will then process the
upgrade according to the booking status and seat availability. You will
receive the upgrade immediately if the flight is not busy, otherwise,
the outcome will be given at the boarding gate."

Cathay Boy: was this from a downgrade (e.g. PE --> Y - PE miles, US$40 and upgrade cert)?
If yes, can the upgrade cert mileage exceed the mileage from which the cert was earned (e.g. obtained cert from HKG-BKK PE-->Y , use on HKG-JFK Y-->PE)?
Also must it be same class as original flight (e.g. go from HKG-JFK PE-->J in example above)?

If they are the same certificates as given out for the business loyalty program then the coupon will state if valid for long haul flights or just short haul.

My friend once got her cert returned to her at the gate because she got op-upped anyway. Very nice gesture, but I guess it's not always the case.
