2 weeks back on a flight from MUC-JFK on LH in F, I was the only passenger in F. I did not eat or drink anything during the flight and just before arrival at JFK a very friendly flight attendant got me a bottle of KRUG and 2 boxes of chocolates.

Krug is widely available in HK. BTW, its not a gift if you have to ask for it.

It's happened to me twice, both on 884 HKG-LAX when I was the only F pax. Towards the end of the flight, a cabin crew member came over and said that she could see that I really enjoy it, and that the crew wanted me to have the bottle.
Don't ask. It's tacky. If you get it, you get it. Keep asking for REFILLS throughout the flight! =D |

In Hebrew, chutzpah is used indignantly, to describe someone who has overstepped the boundaries of accepted behavior. In traditional usage, the word expresses a strong sense of disgust, condemnation and outrage. |
hello moral police.
anyway, 249 on the astor website was for a (notmal 750) bottle. not magnum... so that's a 50% off on krug :o |

In these days of cost cutting, I'd be surprised if the FAs proactively 'gift' you anything. Even when they exchanged the amenity kit they had to log it. I'd suspect that they need to account for bottles consumed onboard as well and if a bottle is missing, they will need a reason for it.

Silver-tls is right. Last summer, in the course of a conversation with me, a friendly FA lamented the fact that even the F crew no longer had the liberty of giving passengers gifts. She cited alcohol and toiletry kits as examples. Apparently there were strict procedures put in place to account for those expensive items after every flight. The crew had to explain any discrepancies. It sounded to me that good will was not an acceptable reason to be generous. I don't blame CX actually, since it's losing money. Incidentally, even the F chocolates had to be locked up "at the rear of the plane" before arrival in the USA. But that was a US Government requirement. I didn't ask why, but certainly it's not easy to be an F FA these days.

Has CX ever gifted anyone a bottle of champagne (Krug?)
I don't like drinking on the plane and was planning to buy a bottle of champange to celebrate my Bday the next evening in HK. If I tell the FA that I don;t plan on drinking during the flight but would love to be gifted a bottle for later to celebrate my b-day, do you think they would/could? In a way it'd feel a bit weird asking but if I'm not drinking during the flight, I'd love to have some to celebrate my bday the next day. It would be inappropriate to ask. |

I figured it would save me some time going out to find some. I guess i could ask "would you rather gift me a bottle or have me down 2-3 bottles tonight?" lol j/k
Seriously, it not a big deal. I doubt anyone would turn down a gift ;) On a scale, it's sort of like an Y passenger asking to be gifted a bottle of coke. Imagine someone asking the FA: "Would you rather gift me a bottle of coke, or have me down 10-15 cups of soft drinks tonight?" As a passenger on the flight, you're entitle food, drinks, amenities, etc and it's the FA's responsibility to serve you, to the best of their ability/power. Having one less bottle of KRUG (or Coke) in their inventory will definitely not break CX's balance sheet. But at the same time, it just does not mean you're allowed to take away anything/everything they have on board. F passenger or not....it's just the same. Like another member posted previously, just don't ask - you will put the FA into a very awkward position. It's like how on some certain flights, they serve soft drinks by the can. With ice, it's probably normally enough to fill 2-3 cups per a 330mL can of soft drink. But sometimes....if you're lucky, the FA will give you the whole can to yourself. If they "gifted" you that, great - by all means save it for later on the flight....drink it later day the day.....take it home....do whatever you like with it. If you're in F pax and at the near end of the flight - a FA decides to gift you a bottle of KRUG, it's the same. But I definitively wouldn't walk into the gallery and and ask the FA if I can take a can/bottle of Coke home....just cause they have surplus in their inventory..... |
I have had the privilege of enjoying CX First twice in my life, and was presented with a bottle of Krug after my first flight (SFO-HKG).
Wonderful crew, enjoyed the service all throughout and had at least a bottle of it on the way over. :) Very nice touch but did not in the least bit expect it as it was presented in a duty-free bag on the way out! Enjoy it in the proper manner - at 35000 feet with your feet up on the ottoman! :) |
