CX codeshare??

Why does not CX at least codeshare with more of its alliance partners?

I am sure if they codeshare the moscow-hong kong route with S7 and put the CX code on S7 routes to Europe they will get more passengers

Air Berlin- they offer flights out of Istanbul/Zurich as well -surely they can put these routes online and code share with Air Berlin??-I mean cathay's vision statement says "strengthen HK as a hub ...." surely this is a way of achieving it

also if they code share with S7/Air Berlin-no backtracking will be required

S7 recently signed a code share with Etihad ( to melbourne!!!!-they could have done this with alliance partner cathay!!!) and Air Berlin is highly promiscuous!!-so these airlines seem willing to codeshare
also Finnair-Cathay do not do much together- maybe there is a reason Cathay is not doing well in Europe-It hates making friends??

with most Oneworld Airlines now going with Etihad on code shares-AA/S7/Air Berlin- Qatar is going to be a loner ( and with the way CX behaves they will not even code share with Qatar)

I think CX should drop HKG-BAH route due to low loading, and add HKG-DOH route using 33G and codeshare with QR for some European spots from DOH like ZRH, MAN, MUC. This can have an effect of virtually "resuming" these routes.

And for S7, CX can do codeshare to its Russian domestic routes from DME, and offer S7 codeshare on CX207/206

Ahhhh you are asking a very interesting but unfortunately complex issue...

For Air Berlin, it is not in AB and CX's interests to codeshare at this moment. CX does not offer any flights to AB's hub. Frankfurt is somewhat end terminus for CX flight. With the Gulf three and European Big Three enjoying the EU-ASIA long haul market, it is actually very difficult and challenging for CX/SQ alike to penetrate into new European market. I am not saying that CX and AB should not explore the opportunities of codeshare, but with Etihad holds 30% stake of AB and aims to have AB feed into Abu Dhabi market, it will not be possible for AB to codeshare with CX in Hong Kong and onwards. AB also could not fly to Hong Kong in order to forge the codeshare market. A codeshare from Zurich or Istanbul will face restrictions for one or two routes only, which would not make business sense.

CX has been very conservative in terms of choosing partner and routes planning. Unless there is obvious and guaranteed benefits in both short term and long term, CX would be very reluctant to venture into commitment which may result in failure. In terms of S7, there is more hurdles in regulatory approval. I am sure CX will have no trouble to codeshare with SU, but with S7, there would be a little bit more network needed. Again, if you analyses the passenger flow, the Russian domestic-International transfer market is really very much low volume and highly concentrated with certain airline(s) and routes.

So the codeshare with AB is restricted to few routes only and not commercial viable. When the new Berlin airport opens it might provides more opportunities, however the 30% stake of Etihad on AB may be malicious towards CX's corporation. Codeshare with S7 sounds great but the regulator and the market does not have sounding support.

The only one we may expect something from would be the Qatar connection for future expansion.

being in oneworld means CX can sell flights on it's own metal and other OW partners on the one itinerary - there may not be any financial incentive to put CX code on to other carriers you mentioned when they can just do this..
