Don't OLCI but turn up to airport early?

CX doesn't seem to be answering its phones very well this week. But, you can always confront their people in person at in-town checkin. Better idea: talk to a concierge at a good hotel; my colleague who I described upthread was too lazy to go to the AEX station today until he knew more about his flight status (those email updates are almost completely useless), so he tried his luck with the GH concierge instead, which turned out to be a good call; concierge was able to reach a human at CX within 30 seconds, who provided all relevant info/advice.

Question About Aircraft Rotation

Can anyone advise what inbound aircraft / flight from HKG is used for the return CX889 for JFK-YVR-HKG?

It does not seem that it would be CX888 as that aircraft arrives from YVR at 7:00AM each day (unless it sits on the ground at JFK for over 15 hours, which is possoble), nor would it be CX846, which arrives at JFK at 10:55PM Would it be:

CX830, arrives JFK at 1:10PM
CX840, arrives JFK at 8:10PM

I am asking because I am on an upcoming CX889 later this week, and am trying to see how the inbound schedule might be affected with the current operational hurdles, as I have a connecting flight on another carrier after arrival into YVR later that morning.

Thank you in advance.

At least for TPE for the rest of the week, almost all awards and all revenue tickets pulled from the system.

Been trying to look for some tickets for this weekend (last minute travel), and all revenue tickets have been pulled from SIN and TPE until the start of next week. I knew I should've bought my tickets a couple of days ago... :(

CX 840 is the aircraft, that turns around and does CX 889 to YVR/HKG.

CX 846 will turn and become CX 845 - the 1am flight back to HK.

My cousin had a long day in HK but the CX staff took care of her in the end.
She was flying CX 520 to NRT and then onward to the USA on AA. I gave me my VIPOW to upgrade for AA segments and she was a Platinum member, in case one wonders about the routing. AA also decides to cancel that NRT to JFK flight, which is not smart but HND slot is more important in long term. Anyway, everything was normal till boarding time. She was first sent to 521, the mid-field/satellite terminal, but they were still clearing the JAL flight to NRT. Her flight was then delayed till 12:30pm, and at boarding time, there was no sign of staff. CX was understaffed as clearly depicted. I told her to call AA HK office first, and they advised her to fly to NRT regardless and AA would take care of her accommodation at NRT. Then her flight was further delayed till 4:45pm, and she obviously did not want to stay at Narita hotel all by herself. So she approached the desk and they asked her if she wanted to fly Y (upgrade ticket) to JFK nonstop. She said that she would rather not due to her back problem. Then they just gave her an opup to JFK on CX 840. She immediately headed over and then found out the flight was canceled. Then she went back to the lounge and was rebooked on CX 846 J (Well Y was overbooked anyway but that was a nice gesture). She arrived at the gate with no sign of staff but according to cx.com, CX 846 finally took off at 8pm.

BTW, CX 520 finally took off at 5:20pm. I was very happy that CX staff took her out from that flight, or else there would be no AA staff to assist with rebooking at NRT that late, and CX would have to do the work anyway.

In general, she was very happy with the CX staffs, which were under lots of pressure, and of course, very stressed out about the situation. At least she was in the lounge and CX staffs were very patient. Chaos were everywhere with lots of angry passengers. She personally saw police was involved, as some Middle Eastern men were physically threatening the staff over at EVA Air. Lots of crazy passengers! I am sure she has more stories to share.

She is due to arrive at midnight and possibly has to bus over T-4 for immigration due to the late arrival. Not sure if INS at T-7 will make an exception.

Carfield, thank you for the rotation clarification - I appreciate it.

We arrived in Hong Kong on July 23rd. Our connecting flight to Jakarta was supposed to leave on July 24th at 7 PM. We checked earlier in the morning and it was still on schedule, so we went to the airport.

When we got to the airport, I can't tell that anything was different. However, as soon as we passed immigration and security, it was REALLY crowded so I can sense something was wrong. There were people EVERYWHERE, sitting on the floors, and the lines for the ticket agents were really long. We went to the lounge (The Wing) and they were not accepting any more customers and directed us to the Cabin. The Cabin was also more than at capacity, with customers sitting on the floor. We got lucky and found seating at the computer counter when someone left.

I went to the Cabin's agent at the counter and the line was about 15 people deep (MUCh better than the line outside where I heard it was 2-3 hours wait) - originally our flight was just delayed until 9 PM, and I was thinking of getting on an earlier flight but decided to just keep our original flight. The agent was helpful and I really applaud them for being so composed even though (some) people were yelling at them.

By 9 PM, even the earlier flight that was supposed to leave at 5 PM had not left, so I knew something was wrong. The 5 PM flight finally left at 9:30 PM, and then come the dreaded announcement, that our 9 PM flight was canceled. My husband waited in line while I tried to get some rest, and we were re-booked to the next morning's flight (July 25 at 9 AM). They also provided hotel and breakfast.

When we got out of the Cabin, I still saw SO MANY people at the gate and the customer service desk was really, really crowded with crazy, crazy lines.

We got our sleep and when we came back to the airport on July 25, it was not as crowded which is a good sign, although we still saw people who appeared to spent the night at the airport. Our flight was delayed for 1 hour but I was just glad that we were able to get to our final destination safely.

This was probably the craziest travel day we've had ever...

Luggage compensation?

Redeemed BA miles for CX 416 at 4:30 pm on 24 July in business. Actually flew CX 412 on 7 am 25 July, spending my time in the J lounges as they kept dangling the carrot of leaving Real Soon Now. That extra 10K Avios for business was the best decision I ever made. Naturally, my bag didn't make it. Pax overloaded the luggage claim person in Seoul, and all they did was take Passenger Information Cards. They couldn't even give us claim numbers; all I have is a photo of an agent taking my sticker and a carbon copy of the card I filled out. And they're not answering the phone. Do I get an allowance to buy clothes?

I was one of the lucky people able to flight out on 24th , the 10.20 departure time was delay to 12, than 1pm than 2pm, although the plane was parked at the gate since 8am, (the captain later on the flight inform us that was due to strong wind, they can not get the trucks close to the plane to service it without damaging to the plane)
The funny thing was this flight is not full with at lease 20 empty site, with 2 flights from 23rd had been cancelled, and this turn out to be the only flight to Mel (the other later flights also been delay due to planes not in position) I through they would like to pack more people into this fligh.
However, a big thanks the CX staff in The Cabin for their service to keep us feed and the table clean.

I was on CX 548 HKG-HND today. We were very lucky. Flight scheduled for 8:45 AM, left on schedule, arrived on schedule, and we ended up with a brand new 4-class plane, so I got to sit in PE (although service was Y). One thing I noticed was that PE has 2-4-2 seating, while economy had 3-3-3. Frankly, why would anybody sit in the middle 4 when you could sit in the middle 3 in the back? That's just daft.

All the other CX Tokyo flights were either cancelled, the only one not cancelled was CX 520, which sounds like it was a sh!tshow of the first order.

Typhoon Haikui

So Typhoon Haikui pounds Shanghai today. Most of the fights to/from Shanghai today(8/8) are cancelled. CX.com said that CX and KA will resume operation at midnight(8/9).
So here is my question. My flight is SHA-HKG-TPE on 8/10.
I can checkin HKG-TPE but I can not checkin SHA-HKG. And I guess I lost my seat assignment.
What is the chance I can get on to the plane?
Can I only check in in the airport now?

Thanks
